Here's another trip down memory lane. C-65 Chevrolet,427 cubic inches under the hood,5 speed short 4th transmission,23K 2 speed rear end, pulling a 3-9's City Weld. 23K to 24K lightweight and legally scale 56K. Do not pizz me off by calling that a Hot Shot because they were not Hot Shots. I used to leave LaSalle Steel in Hammond,In. with 60-100K on a weekly basis. That was with a 26K lightweight on a 6 axle. Barred off the Ohio Turnpike for having a trailer engineered to defeat axle scales. Had to hire a lawyer and fight the Turnpike Commission to get back on. But i did get back on.

About 3 MPG and the motors used to go about 150,000 miles. Can't remember when we used to pull the heads and do a vavle job. I'm guessing around 75-80,000. We used Competition Cams Hi-Energy cams for a while but they cheapened the heat treating or something started wiping lobes off the cam, switched to GM marine cams they lasted and did an excellent job in the day. Holley carbs, instead of mufflers we used an 6-8" diameter air tanks. We were running so much advance the back of a regular muffler would burn right out in no time. When you flipped the hood at night the exhaust manifolds would be cherry red. Cracked the manifolds pretty regularly also.

I'm still runnin' my '75 C65 GMC Four Two Seven! Mileage unknown, no smoke and you can't hear her run! Single axle dump, central hydraulics, Spicer 5652 sync. 5 speed, 2 speed rear 6.50 & 8.85 ratios.. Keep in mind 5th is 1:1!... Screamin' 427 tall deck. 10ft x 48" plow and spreader box too...Still running points (governor distributor), the Holley 4150G governor carb... She still has heat and floor boards and can haul anything you put in the 9 foot bed. lol.. I switched out the 10.00 20's in favor of 11r 22.5 demountable tubeless. They fit the Dayton hubs perfectly. Just a good ol' truck.

Guess I should have stated that is a general rule of thumb. Some states do allow divisible loads, for over weight permits, most do not.

The year was 1972. Loaded shot gun as refered to. A 4x4 and 1 chain on each end of 4x4. Suicide 1 chain in front and 2 in back. That is how i was taught but times have changed.

Did you run for BP or Dworkin? Couple of guys on Kaplan had them trailers. I think they put lawn mower mufflers on the air tank to cover up dumping the air.

my old buddy Goldie was with George Transfer and ran Baltimore to Pittsburg for 20 some years and hauled mostly single coils (heavy singles ) he would only put one chain over top none thru the eye unless it was sucide but still only one chain never lost one or had one move.
