The 'tractor protection valve'

Yep, the refrigerator was "The Box" (short for ice box), the record player was "The Motorola" and the sink was called "The Zink", Windows were often called "The Winda". It was there form of fashionable of the poor folks, but they always had plenty of beer!

 

ROFLMAO... I forgot about the zink...

 

I never did figure out why Grandma called it "The Zink", I had already asked her enough dumb questions by then. I remember our first refrigerator was "The Kelvinator". When I was little I asked my mom what goes on in there like it was some sort of magical wonder.

I had always heard that they used to make the sinks from zink, so that they wouldn't rust, but I thought I would google it before i responded, check this link for the zink... they talk about that possibility if you read about halfway down the page.

 

water piping in that era was often iron ~ the rust was bad for the gullet but people called them lead-pipes

I have heard the pipes called lead pipes as a child, but never thought any thing about that. Check this link out, they made pipes out of lead back then, I just googled lead pipe and found this. Makes you wonder how we all turned out okay.
