"I quit my job several months ago with plans to stay in the same line of work (auto sales), but my friend convinced me to go to CDL school with him and try out a new career."
Punch him in the face for doing this to you....

Hey and thanks for the info. We are still TRYING to find a good CDL school but we live in the middle of nowhere podunk texas so our only LITTLE college here quit doing the classes. LOL Will and can drive to Dallas but finding most are owned or affiliated by other companies. I dont want a we train and hire you deal. Then they OWN you and I have noticed some are pretty shady. As the the trainer we have decided to wait on my training. That way once he has put in enough time he can train me. Plus it gives us time to make sure this is REALLY what we want before we both spend all that time and money. Plus one of us has to be with our dog during all this training etc. so no biggy! I HOPE you get a female trainer. How awkward that would be to travel OTR with them for 8 weeks, sleeping with them a few feet away. Just weird to me. LOL Maybe it's just me but I know my hubby is NOT fond of the idea and refuses to go with opposite sex himself. Seems like they would pair up same sex to avoid any possible liabilities etc. but whatever. I am just thrilled they sound like a good company. Thanks again for your answer and if ya have time can ya keep me posted on training and how your experience goes? Would love to hear. :biggrin_25519:

If you ever worked in the car business you wouldn't say that...I'm much happier driving than I was working at a dealership for 5+ years

OK time for an update...So we made it through the first 8 weeks so far and we just received our first check at .48cpm split. It was only .48 on the last load of the week because we hit the 8 week mark on a Sunday. So far our miles have been:
Week 1: 362 (we only did 2 short runs on Sunday and Monday, the load we got on Tuesday went on next weeks check)
    Week 2: 4918
    Week 3: 3948
Week 4: 7194 (we started a coast-to-coast on monday and finished on thurs, then went right back to CA, then to OR)
    Week 5: 5179
    Week 6: 4786
    Week 7: 4777
    Week 8: 4177

We're now into week 9 and we're up to 5800 miles so far with 2 more days to go. This will be our best check so far, we're hoping to get to 6500-7000 miles by Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. We've also been paid extra for a few loads that had multiple stops, a tractor recovery ($200 each took 6 hours), and we got a $250 bonus for making it through the first 8 weeks. Add that to the school reimbursement ($150/month until we get the $2,800 back we paid for school), hazmat reimbursement, and $5,000 sign-on bonus (we haven't gotten any of that yet but we were told we may get a portion of it on this check) and I'd say we're doing pretty well so far. As long as we keep getting loads there's no way we're not going to do well here. Even if we sat til wednesday we'd still make almost $1,400 each before taxes this week, not including any bonuses or reimbursements. So far so good for me....

Unfortunately we do not have time to spare regarding training. Money is made when you team up and drive. So getting on the road is important. Female trainers are hard to come by. Nope, my husband is not find of the idea at all, but it's driving. I've heard great reviews on the trainers at USX. If they have a female available ill deffinately take her. But if not we both may have to just suck it up. I want to be ready when he is so we can hit the road. I'm super excited and can't wait to start. Getting our old lives in order so we don't have to worry about anything when we go.

That first week... Did you stay in the truck after those short runs? What was your cpm during the first 8? It's nice to see that you are getting decent miles. I know the first 2 months after training is hard. 3 weeks for school, 3 weeks for training, the 8 weeks of small pay.
Thanks so much for the update!!

Yes we stayed in the tractor the whole time, I sleep while he drives and vice-versa but we usually get up to help each other out if need be. The first 8 weeks we got .32cpm split but halfway through we received our hazmat endorsements from Florida so they bumped us to .36cpm split. We went to an 8 week school in the beginning but it was well worth it, they prepare you to be a professional driver instead of just preparing you to pass the CDL test. My training took 3 1/2 weeks because my trainer's truck broke down when I only needed 4 more hours, and the first 8 weeks is not the best pay but with some of the bonuses we've done pretty well. My YTD is $8,409 gross for 3 days orientation, 3 1/2 weeks training, and 8 weeks preliminary team pay. If we can average just 5,000 miles per week for 50 weeks a year we'll make $60k+...
