Hello everyone. A month ago I applied for company-sponsored training through Driver's Solutions and C1. I would either be running team for PAM or solo for USA. My application was well-received and I breezed through my e-Gears test prep. Over the past 4 weeks I have been in regular contact with my Driver's Agent. My background check took 3 weeks to come back from my county sheriff and it just came in the Wednesday before Labor Day when I spoke to my DA. He said he already got the OK from PAM but needed to send it to USA on Thursday and wouldn't have an answer until today. He said all along that if I didn't leave anything out and was truthful about what it would look like that I was good to go on Sept 10. I've spent the last month preparing to leave, borrowing money, moving things into storage, etc etc. I called him today at 1:15 and he said he still hadn't heard back but that he should know tomorrow and to call again tomorrow. When I got home from running errands, I logged into my Driver Account and all of the fields were blank. I was also receiving a message that I was not registered in e-Gears. Having heard of this happening to others, my heart sank. I called my agent and said "Why is my dashboard blanked?". My agent was surprised by this so he took a look. I guess in the 3 hours since we spoke he got a message that there were no longer any sponsorships available from either company at this time and that I would not be starting Monday, like I thought. If my background check had come back sooner, I would have had a spot. He told me to keep on him and he will keep trying as well and call me if any more become available. If 90 days pass from when I first applied, I have to reapply.

The purpose of this post is two-fold. First, to make prospective students aware that things can turn a 180 at any time even if you're otherwise golden so don't burn any bridges or invest too much money in preparations until it is set in stone. Secondly, to ask the readers if there are other "no money down" schooling options available to someone like myself that I should look into. I have been told the following companies have schools but most require a nice chunk of change to start; Conway, Werner, Swift, FFE, Millis, Prime, and Schneider. Both Millis and Werner are local for me but I don't have to $$ to even cross the threshold of Millis. I haven't totally given up on Drivers Solutions (they aren't giving up on me either) but I should be proactive and look into other options that could get me on the road sooner.

i wouldn't think that werner and swift would be a money down school.

i know central and england are totally free. provided you complete the employment timeframe for them.

in fact, central seems to be the best of the schools. and i know they have lanes in your area for hometime.

it does take roughly 3 - 4 months to get into school though.

and your background check didn't come from your local sheriffs office. it came from a nationwide database probably associated with the fbi.

they want to know if you have a record in all 50 states.

Fergie, this is just the first of many "bumps" that you will find in the life of a trucker. Sorry that it happened to you, but know that when you get through school, and get hired, you will run into all sorts of unexpected stuff. Everything from getting your truck yanked out from under you if you want some time off, to having the company you are working for go out of business. It is a tough life.

But if it is what you really want, you will get there. Good luck.

Thanks Don. I've spent a good many weeks on here reading up on a variety of topics and taking advice from those who have "been there, done that" and I always appreciate insight. I'm not giving up, just need to re-direct my focus for a little while until I get in somewhere. I'm on a detour for now but I will reach my destination. As a former first-responder, manager, etc I am quite accustomed to unexpected obstacles and I adapt pretty quickly to them. Still "irks" me a little bit when it happens though. LOL

    Big Don Thanks this.

    Fergie,

Go to google and type in Free Truck Driving Schools. Look for the one from truckingtruth. It has a list of the schools there. Personally I am looking at Prime. Starting pay is better and so is the pay while in school. There is no money down at some of those schools.

    Best of luck

Hey Fergie!! Find the school nearest you and see what they have as far as companies that come to the school to recruit!! Then contact the company and get a prehire contract started!! Once you get the prehire then the school will be paid by the company not you!! Swift is one of them that do it and I know that Werner does it as well!! They call it tuition reembursement!! I believe that Schnieder does it as well but they have there own training!! Here in Colorado Springs, there are a few companies that provide there own CDL training!! Remember, CDL training is just that...CDL training!! When you sign on with a company then they will assign you with a trainer!! This is when the real training starts!! You can go to the DMV and get a CDL permit and then go to the companies and get prehired!! I hope that this helps ya!! Oh, trucking is the #####!!! I love it!! Like everything you do it's what you make it!! Good luck out there when you get started!!

    Fergie,
Have you spoke to anyone @ Millis? Unless they changed very recently they are training drivers that contract to work for them to repay the tuition, how much $ were you told it cost to "cross the threshhold"? Who told you? Your avitar says your in Dayton, thats only about 40 min. from thier training facility in Trenton/Overpeck, maybe a face to face with a recruiter might shed some much needed light for you. Also if you go to the "report a good/bad company" page on here and search Millis, they have several threads on there about thier training and equipment, mostly positive posts. Schneider training opens the door to the tanker world, just sayin... Also there are "public" training facilitys out there that qualify for student loans and grants, there is one in Middletown, Richmond,In., used to be one @ Clark county Vocational School but haven't seen or heard anything about that one for a while. 1 last thing, I don't know your situation and am not asking, and you probably should not comment one way or the other on here, but if you should happen to be recieving unemployment compensation or public assistance of any kind, they will not only pay your tuition they will pay you a small "wage" to attend a training program to get off the assistance, there again I'm just sayin...
