Stay away from the cummins. I'm having issues with my Volvo and from what dealers are telling me is that they cant work on Cummins engines at most of their dealerships. Been in the shop 4 times the last 2 months with DEF failures. Not one of the shops was a Volvo dealer. Been sent to either a Cummins service shop or Kenworth. I'm not knocking Cummins cause I think overall its a better engine than what Volvo has but getting parts has been a PITA

No I'm not saying Volvo is bad. I'd go with it. Just I'd just get one without the Cummins. I run flatbed and its taken the beating that flatbedding does to these trucks. My issue is the lack of support between Volvo and Cummins. That being said my company has stopped putting Cummins in our trucks and gone with the D13 with 13 speed autos. Fuel mileage and durability has gotten alot better. I grew up in trucking and all honesty and I'm sure some of the old timers will agree to this but they don't make trucks like they used. The EPA and all these save the tree groups have put these truck and engine makers through the loops and made it nothing more than a big headache for all involved in trucking. I get asked alot about what that DEF means and I simply tell tell them that its just a really big pee bottle the government stuck on my truck so some idiot in Washington DC can go home at nite and feel good about how he saved a pine tree

We had four '06/'07 Volvo 780's with D12 motors. The majority of problems we had were X-Y shifters & harnesses, EGR valves and A/C blower motors and resistors. We bought them at 380K miles, sold them at 550k miles. We never got stranded anywhere where we couldn't get them fixed. D12 is gutless but as far as getting it serviced, was never really an issue. Anytime a mechanic tilted the hood however, it was at least $1000.

I have a 2011 Volvo 730 with a Cummins ISX 500ST and I just passed 130,000 miles. This truck has been in the shop 10 times since I bought it and most of those trips were for sensor failures on the DPF side. Once was an ECU for the DEF pump that went bad after a rain storm. That ECU, the pump and the tank are Volvo parts not Cummins. Lately everytime that it tries to regen I get a check light for another sensor failure. This happens when it tries to do a driving regen but I can force a parked regen and the light will go off.

BTW...if the check light comes on you have 10 hours of operation to get it to a shop before you get a derated shutdown.

My biggests problems with the Cummins are that mine regens every 1100 miles. There are constant sensor failures. My fuel mileage is 5.4....but I haul 3-4000# overgross across the backroads of Texas.

As far as getting it fixed I have not had any problems with Volvo or Cummins dealers getting it fixed.

I'd stay away from both. The Freightliner had a DETROIT DD13, not the Volvo D13. Don't get them confused. People are reporting good things on the DD(Detroit) series engines.

It's Cummins, NOT Cummings. Who's Cummings? Get it straight. I also heard Cat owns Detroit.

Other than the mechanical/reliability issues already discussed, the engine brake on a Cummins is much better/stronger than on a Volvo D13.
