How good of a #### living?
I appreciate your reply. It's reasonable, logical. I used to work in retail and a lot of the time is spent waiting for customers to show up. But hours, not days...
I also drove cab way back in the day when Caucasians used to do that sort of thing for a livingand it could be feast or famine and trying to position oneself to be in the right place at the right time.
But being stuck in, say, LA doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me unless, of course, all the trucks are in LA! So, exactly how does one know what the situation is relative to the position of the other drivers in the TC?

Paloma, I know I asked you once before but don't remember if you answered, my memory is fading the older I get
but I was wondering, are you married with kids at home to support, etc, or, are you single living in your truck on the road? Thanks.
-
Rogerthat, I have several friends that are O/O. My good friend runs with a company where he never sits, is on paper logs and can fudge if need be, gets 90% of the load, etc.
His truck payment is reasonable at $950 a month and he is buying his own curtain van for around $450 a month. He's always telling me how he makes a lot of freaking money as an O/O.
Last year he grossed around $70,000 after expenses and before personal income taxes. Of course, when you are self-employed you have to pay double on social security tax too. Nonetheless, he had no health insurance for his family, no pension plan, no disability ins, no life ins, no vacation pay,
no holiday pay, so on and so forth.
Worse yet, he had a whopping $800 in his maintenance fund and is driving a truck with 1 million miles plus on it. If his engine goes, he's sunk. Plus, he lives with the daily responsibility and anxiety of the "what if" something goes wrong, including the high spike in fuel costs this past few weeks.
In conclusion, when I compared my company pay, including all the benefits I listed above as part of my pay package where I work, I'm actually better off as a company driver.Rogerthat Thanks this. -
Thanks, Scooter. What does this friend of yours gross per mile?
-
Per mile doesn't really matter its what goes in the pocket. The main concern is your mpg.
-
And gross doesn't matter its the net. I know an owner op at may last year grossed 175k but after expenses pocketed 65
-
Well that's what I was told by an owner op. I'm no expert.but what I do know is that I'm leasing on with may in the near future.
-
I don't really know...
According to him, they don't look at it that way. It's baed on how much the load pays. Some shippers pay better than others, obviously.
I'm getting too old to run my own business as an O/O. I'll let the young bucks like Joker do it
-
Ha ha I'm gonna give it a try hopefully it works out
-
My kids are grown up but was still paying child support untill last year. I'm not on the road to loose money. Remember, Owner/Ops make more money for the company they are leased onto, therefore we move and don't sit.
