This is not universally true. I called my local DWC today to see what the scoop was and they have no such requirement for committing to go OTR.

I should also mention that you can "go OTR" without having to be in the truck for weeks at a time. My first OTR job was strictly "out and back" and I was home every weekend. Also, because of being "out and back" I was oftentimes able to get in a night or two at home during the week. OTR does not automatically mean a life of solitude for weeks on end. Some effort and research will lead you to companies that can fit your needs.

 

I heard that. My first job was the same way and all others afterward. There is no way I'm staying out more than a week unless I break down or get stuck in a blizzard. People put down craigslist but that's where I found my job at Reddaway. I know you need to be smart when looking but there are some decent jobs on there that will get you home often. They just won't train you to get your license.

The Con-way Freight Truck Driver Student Program is a 12-week training program designed to give you the skills and experience you need to become a successful Con-way Freight Driver Sales Representative. Our training program consists of:

• Classroom education
• Hands-on driving training

You could get lucky and land a local gig right out of trucking school but it is highly unlikely. Especially in today's economy. I personally would not suggest spending $6000 for trucking school in hopes to land a local job right away. Unless you are totally fine with spending at least a year over the road to start out then I would highly suggest you find another career to get into. Just like anything else, you must pay your dues first.
