I wish my listeners reported more success with the e-cigs. Although a study this week demonstrated that they don't have as many cardiovascular risks as once thought, I have not had a patient nor listener yet tell me they quit smoking long term as a result of their use. And those that have nicotine in its cartridge may be just perpetuating the nictonine addiction. However, they are still a safer choice that regular cigarettes and if you are smoking less as a result, we have to look at it as a plus!!!

Can a healthy diet bring down and control high cholesterol?

Yes it can. However if someone has a genetic tendency to overproduce choleterol diet can only do so much and we physicians have to add a medication.

I always recommend, if cholesterol is mildly to moderately elevated, to avoid fatty food, greasy food, frequent meals with beef and to add daily exercise. Broiling and baking obviously better than frying. Fish and chicken without skin with vegetables becomes a common meal. Boring, but healthier than beef and pork. Increase fiber and decrease portion size, but check your cholesterol levels regularly with your medical provider to ensure its working. If not, you may need some additional assistance.

    Great question!!

Thanks DrDaliah, I try to start every day off with oatmeal(steel cut), and fruit for sweetness.
I'm having problems with a gluten intolerance, but its mild and only acts up with bread or pastas.
The cholesterol is my main target right now.
Im a dairy and cheese freak, and love bread..... so, I try to do non fat dairy or atleast low fat, but I still have to have it.

thanks for your help, and welcome to the forum.

hey i just started on insulin in december after a quite serious bout with dka .....guess my endo and doc think i was either just a type one honeymooning or a type 1.5 from the beginning ......point being i am 6 2 and now 230 lbs was 138 when i was in icu in december .....working on losing a few pounds right now but it seems when i restrict carbs my bg levels go up a little more than i would like and when i walk or run more than five miles or so i have to treat impending lows which seems couterproductive to the exercise i usually back off my insulin b4 any exercise but do you have any suggestions as i have to keep my sugar levels higher above 100 to keep dot happy kinda makes the whole scenerio complicated

no i am on levimer and novalog a1c was 15 plus in dec and 7.7 in mar and june was a 7,0 .....just upped my levimer from 20 twice a day to 21 and my 0novalog is running at a 4 to 1 ratio but was using a little less almost a 3 to 1 to keep my numbers up while driving had my fasting at 80 to 120 but the exemption requires you to keep it over 100 if i read it right .....so i changed my target to 180 two hours after meals instead of the 120 to 140 i was hitting at home but still hoping if i up my basal it will make it easier to go back on a low carb diet and drop the growing stomach .....and driving at night some nights makes it a whole new adventure with insulin control ....hence the split ....and the 15 a1c was with maxed out victoza metformin and actos .....and a vegan low carb diet ....go figure i really didn;t want 8 months off while i went through the exemption process but the pancreas had other plans

Hi Bigdad7!! Whew, glad you made it through the DKA. So let me get this straight. You maxed out on Victoza, Metformin, Actos (Actos works but has been getting alot of heat for its side effects.) And then placed on Insulin. You have tried to keep your weight down and went Vegan,.It sounds like however if you brought your a1c to 7 you have done amazing. Goal is below 6.

When you said your sugars go up when your carbs are cut, its a phenomenon that frustrates many people with diabetes. Many will tell me they go to bed with a Blood sugar of 130 and wake up 150. Its because the liver makes sugar when you sleep or are lacking in dietary carbs. Complex carbohydrates obviously are better to have in your diet, so you don't burn through them so quickly when you run.

So your endo could change around your insulin regimen and possibly bring in a nutritionist to give you more ideas. If you brought your weight down a little bit more it would help as well, but you really have done everything you should. I like how you're exercising.

actually i am off all meds except insulin ....my c peptide came in at almost a zero ....doc endo and educator slash nutritionist all are in agreement that insulin is the way to go since the meds had no effect whatsover ....but that dawn phenomenon drives me nuts not on a vegan diet now but was considering going back on it or at least a low carb deal .....by the way am one of the uninsured masses ....but managed to get the icu bill forgiven by the evil catholic hospital even though a five day icu bill only came to 10000 which i though was a bargain ....and the evil pharmacutical company is sending me the insulin for free for the last year (which i will have to start paying for againn since i am working again ) and the doctor/clinic i am working with has me on a sliding scale but they are partially funded by the feds:) .....let us not forget the evil coporation ie walmart that has somehow found a way to sell test strips for 9 dollars for 50 instead of the 60 dollars that all the name brand strips sell for .....
so glad obamacare is going to save me from all these evil groups ....by the way love your show
