Thanks, It looks like replacing the coax in this pete will be a PITA but I'm sure it needs to be done. Thats the reason I bought a new coax and ran it from the rear of the truck but found out that was a big mistake .LOL. I guess the CB man didn't know what he was talking about when he said to put it in the rear of the truck!! I'll need to get it done soon. Thanks, Bill
Sometime this weekend the big metal ANT on the rear is coming off.

get yourself a 102" whip ,use all the same coax and mounts with ground.Mount it somewhere on you chassis which is a perfect ground. Now because it is a 102" antenna you should have a perfect match but I would still check it anyway.
-
Not necessarily. Location of the antenna, even a 102" whip, can make a big difference. Besides, 102" whip isn't practical on a semi. (it can be done on some models, don't know how practical it is though.)Big_m Thanks this.

the whole thing is the 102" antenna will get you above your trailer.the trailer is not blocking your signal but it would choke it some so you wouldn't get out as good towards the rear. Why do you think most drivers use twin antennas?
-
I went back to the CB shop and he said my ANT was to close to the rear of the cab I should try leaning it back a little. Well I did and the SRW is down to 1.5 but it acts a little odd!! Meaning when I 1st key up it's at 1.9 but after holding it for a sec it drops to 1.5....What that means I have not a clue!

I had one that did that but the coil inside the ant. base was getting hot when I would key up and that messed up the tuning.
Check your radio output power with no audio and see if it drops with the indicated SWR drop. -
as long as you have a reading of less than 2.0 you should be ok with your radio. If it starts to get to about 2.9 then start to worry . get yourself a good volt meter to check to make sure everything is connected properly,if it is then you are good to go.
-
if the SWR goes to 2.9 then don,t talk on. At that high ratio you will probably burn out your finals or signal protection diodes or something else.the SWR is a ratio of signal out to signal in ,you want to get it as low as possiable. the higher it gets the more signal you lose and 2.9 would be like 85% signal loss, maybe more. the higher it gets the worse it is.I would have to be right next to you or at least within a 100 feet to even copy what you would be saying. Run your own coax and get some no-ground antennas .they will match up as long as it is done correctly.

So is that Outback mount meant to move the antenna around the side extender and beside the outside of the cab?
If so, would the antenna still not be too close to the cab except for maybe a 102" whip and the only at the top if the truck was a mid roof or less? -
the roof of your truck should be no higher than your trailer. As long as where you mount it the antenna sticks up over the top of your trailer. all you need to expose is about 6" of the whip.
