I traded in 8 drive tires, 2 were no good. the other 6 were virgins and good for caps.
Now the tire guy tells me he can't give me instant credit at purchase and they have to be sent to this x-ray machine. ( fact or fiction? )
If they pass the x-ray he will cut me a check, ok fine. At this time he's leading me to believe that these are first line tire casings ( 4 yokes and 2 toyos ) and they will fetch a premium like $50 a piece, if they pass. ( He implies this, doesn't come right out and say this ) AND he says he'll need 2 weeks to get them looked at........
Moving ahead to today, I bought the new ones on August 3rd and I still don't have a check so after repeated calls I drop in at the store. I see the manager and express my disatisfaction and request his assistance. So, he makes a call or two and comes out of his office and now tells me the yokes will only be worth $30ea and the 2 toyos, $40ea. A far cry from the $50 he implied.
Q: What is a virgin casing worth at your place? Is there this x-ray machine ? Do you have to wait for your refund? This guy on the level?
Hit me! What is your deal where you are?

Yup, it's a racket . I've been dealing with the same bridgestone dealer for ever. It's very close to my house. 11r24 talls are only $75 bucks, and you wait 30 days for the check. They do check the tire with an x ray type machine . And any little thing they find wrong the price goes down!!
chalupa Thanks this. -
to my understanding is Michelin will not buy them with out this being done

I get a 60 dollar 'rebate' on cappable casings I trade in when I buy new ones. Never know if the capper will accept the casing until they examine them, usually about 2 weeks. They accept about 3 out of every 4 the dealer turns in.

tell him you will just take your casings back that will make him stutter a little and then he will say you have to pay for having them xrayed those used tires that truck stops sell for 250 bucks are those 30 dollar casings you are talking about and right now there is a shortage of good recappable casings according to my tire man anyway

My usual dealer bills an $80 casing charge on recaps if you're not turning in a good casing. There really isn't a "credit" for casings on new tires the way I do them. When I replace virgin steers and drives I have them sent in for trailer tread. They do get x-ray checked at the plant, and they are a Michelin dealer. Haven't had a bad casing get added on my trailer tire bill yet. Nothing makes me smile bigger than getting a whole axle of fresh trailer tires for $600 otd. In my case the credit is in keeping my casings.
I just had four XDN2 retreads put on a drive axle to try out. If those hold up ok, I may end up paying some casing charges, depending on how many of mine have what tread on the rack when I need more. -
They can't pay you $200 for a casing that they'll likely only make $25 on they have to make a profit. Unless you're in a bind you wouldn't pay more than $150 for a tire like that anyways. If you want $200+ for your old casings have a yard sale, open a tire shop, etc.. I've seen some TA's and Petro's offer as much as $100 a casing on the spot if you're buying tires from them. That's about as good as it gets even though there is a shortage of good casings industry wide. Traded 2 yoko steers back in Dec for some new Goodyears and had to wait about 60 days before a check came in the mail for $60 each after they were inspected by Goodyear. Was supposed to be 30 days, kinda sucks, but is what it is.
