I'm heading to orientation for may trucking on Monday Sept 17 and I want to know what is the what will I be doing other than paperwork? What does the backing test consist of? Is the backing test pretty hard? Is there a pass or fail? Do they show you what to do and how to do it or do they just say here get in and do it? What does the over the road test consist of? I'm asking all this because I'm fresh meat straight out of trucking school and they only showed us enough to pass the dmv test ally dock, straight forward and back, measured stop, right turn and parallel park and then a lot of road driving but the stuff my recruiter said I'll be doing I've never done. So if this subject has come before in this forum my bad for repeating it I didn't feel like scrolling and going page after page trying to look for it.

first day, urinalysis, skills test and road test. in denver, that was all we did the first day
second day, paperwork, listening to all the normal stuff companies make you listen to, sexual harassment, policies, etc...
third day we did qualcom, trip planning, chaining up tire... dont remember what else
think its just 3 days right? lol

they take you outside, say theres the truck, back it up. first you drive around the course in a sectioned off area, to make sure you can turn without hitting the cones, or in case of denver, it WAS big concrete blocks but dont know if its the same, so you do a like square pattern around the course, then you straighten up, go straight back, then pull back forward, and you do a 45 degree backing. if you hit something, they arent gonna say ok thats it you're fired, they wanna make sure you have control of the truck. street, its just like your dmv test, reading signs, changing lanes, driving the truck... again, you can make mistakes, grind gears, you're new its expected. the only thing i didnt do out of all of this was the 45 degree backing up, but you can get out as many times as ya want, they arent grading you like that, just making sure you understand hey i cant see lemme get out and look

    blfan2002 Thanks this.

On the skills test you will have to do a blind side back. The tester will cover your head with a big headsock so you can't see and have you do an alley dock. Just trust your instincts and you'll do just fine.

LOL. Don't mind Scooter. I just finished orientation in P'cola and am playing the waiting game while they crunch numbers on whether to send me to a trainer or have a trainer routed down here. Anywho, the hardest part about the skills evaluation ("test" is a bit harsh) is being nervous. Things are easier if you are relaxed...easier said than done when new. That said, you have to get completely LOST in what you want to do to "fail" or be told to go back to the school for a brush-up. The barrels are quite a bit tighter than school, but I one-shotted each obstacle. Just remember what you were told in school and make the truck work for you. Your evaluator is NOT looking for perfection, rather that you have at least a clue on how to move your truck. Best of luck!

Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors. Make it overly obvious you are using your mirrors, especially going into turns, through the turn, etc.

I always encouraged my students to call out the signs along the route while testing out, especially over-pass heights, signs related to trucks. Obey the speed the speed limit.

Wear a Depends adult diaper too.
