I am real sorry to say that I won't be a part of the pumpkin patch. I earned my CDL the end of June, took 2 months looking for something local, discovered experienced drivers get the local jobs, decided to suck it up, pay my dues and go OTR 'till I could get some experience. Started training 9/4 in GB (my hometown) the 1st week, then to Chicago where I was to train for the next 2 weeks for intermodal. Met my TE, Quintin Scales, on Mon, and he said the 1st day he does the driving, and the student observes. I was so glad to hear that, being so incredibly fatigued from lack of sleep! Anyway, just watching Q maneuver that orange monster around the streets of Chicago and put that trailer in those tight spots in the rail yards was more than this rookie could fathom!
Driving in Chicago and the rail yards is definitely an art, and I didn't feel being so green I could do so safely. Quintin could not have been more supportive, and he did try to get me to attempt driving the streets and backing in the yards, but I was petrified of damaging something! What an asset Quintin is to Schneider! He's only been driving for 18 months total, with Schneider since Feb, but, man, can that dude drive! I learned so much from observing him, and the number one thing was, I don't want to start my driving career in Chicago! I think I may have been able to switch to regional or dedicated, but I found I didn't want to suck it up even temporarily OTR, because after working 13 hrs on Mon, I wasn't thrilled to go back to the hotel to eat a peanut butter sandwich (trying to save money thinking I had 2 weeks to go), and I had a queen size bed, a color tv, a toilet and a shower! How was I going to like eating and sleeping in the same truck I just worked in for 14 hrs?!
I don't know how you guys and gals do it, but I give you my hats off, and keep up the great work! I wish I had it in me, but I just want to drive and go home. Thank you, Quintin for your patience, and valuable lessons. You are a hard worker, and a great teacher, and I don't hold you in any way responsible for my failure! Keep safe out there! I'll keep following the chat room, I enjoy reading the threads, but it makes me sad I'm not a part of it. I'll keep hoping maybe there's something local for me, even if I have to go Class B. Stay safe everybody!

As a new driver you should never expect to get a local job. Getting home every night is a drivers dream that rarely comes true in my experience. As far as sleeping and eating in the truck I look at it as the truck is my home away from home and am glad to only need to step up and back to be sitting in my bed, also it feels cozy in the tight space of my bunk. Well good luck in whatever you choose. Being a truck drive is not for everyone.
chipnbugs Thanks this. -
