Just got my class A permit and I am ready for school. I wanted to know if there are any trucking schools in New York that accept financial aid or Pell grants to help pay for school. I want to go to a private school instead of company sponsored training.. if you know of any schools let me know thanks..

Federal student financial aid will not be available for Trucking school.
I used a DOT federal grant specifically for truck school at Crowder MO. Paid 2700 out of 3200 cost.-- yes that was awesome-- i know
Ask your schools, They will know better than anyone.
Contact ROEL Trucking
Lots of companies will help defer the cost. -
Another option would be to save your money instead of asking other people to pay for your training.
Just a thought.silverspur Thanks this. -
I was laid off last year and was Granted 3k by WIA (federal grant) for training. The amount you can get varies by state, and it involves a TON of paperwork, but well worth it.

When I was talking to different trucking schools. A rep from one of them told me that she heard from a good source that Federal Aid was gonna start recognizing truck driving and start paying for it in or around October. I don't know how much truth there is to this. But I can't see why she would lie about it.

Yes, you can get financial aid to attend Sage Trucking school in Rome, NY since it is a college. You just can't put down 'truck school' on the fafsa application. There's a special code to use (I forgot what). Just give them a call for details.
WIA Grant people laughed at me.
They said that because I had never been in the trucking business in the past, I wouldn't qualify. I KNOW that is not so. The clerk probably on his first day at work. Regardless, it is worth a shot but there is a TON of paperwork AND you must be willing to wait a long long time.
If you call the different schools around (actually, there aren't many in NY), they will advise you better than any forum for what is available for grants and how to apply. -
Not eligible? that sounds plain wrong. I actually spoke with a WIA supervisor today and she said that with the high demand for drivers that they are approving almost everyone to get CDL training. This is in WA state, but seeing as it is a nationwide shortage of drivers I would hope NY would be on the same page.
I actually have to re-do the whole process because I moved to a different county 2 weeks ago and the lady handling my paperwork was fired!!!! funding varies in each county here. The new lady said that they work with a particular school in my area and in most cases full tuition is covered! Hopefully I can get in before my unemployment runs out!
Good luck with your WIA, man. I know it's alot of bureaucratic red-tape B.S., but I think it's worth it in the end. -
Sage told me they don't accept financial aid... Should I call the college at Mohawk valley?
