    Update...
I gave up on my truck and threw a childish fit... lol.
After some hurried calls to headquarters, it looks like they are going to get this one running well enough to make it to Missoula, where I will be trading it for a new(er) truck. The last straw in my mind was when they went to fix the water system last night, and it started leaking INSTANTLY..... not 1.... not.... 2... But from THREE new spots.
I came here to drive... not to sit around and stare enviously at those who come in with fully functional trucks... Feeling a bit down, as this means I am going to have to figure out how to fit myself into a new truck..... but I am told this newer one has only 300k on it, and is supposed to be in REALLY good shape.
    We shall see....
I am also told that my current truck will be mobile by tonight... again, we shall see...

    EDIT to add...
I should point out that I got this truck 16 days ago... out of those 16 days, 12 days have been spent either AT a shop, or heading to a shop.

I feel for you SW..My first truck when I started at WS (1832 Volvo), broke down on my FIRST cross country load. Got from LA to just outside of Tucamcarie NM when the radiator gave out, spewing coolant everywhere. I limped it into town and spent 2 days in a motel while they fixed it. Then later after I'd been out for a couple of loads, the wipers stopped working. It was winter in Ohio and I needed them. Roadside repair got them working again. They gave out again when I was just outside of Salt Lake City. Roadside had to tear apart the steering column on the side of the road and found a wire had been rubbing on something metal probably since the truck was new..they taped it up and I got to the terminal in Salt Lake and called HQ. There was a 'shaker there that was empty and they said I could take it. I checked it out and it was SO FILTHY, I decided to stay with the Volvo. Had no major problems after that except the crappy automatic transmission intermittently not shifting from 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th. They finally gave me a different Volvo 1781 in June. Standard 10 speed and it gave me no trouble until I turned it in for a daycab...
Unfortunately this is the way of trucking. The n00bs get the worst trucks, but if you can get thru it they will give you a better one.

I just turned in my app to WS for my 2nd go around with them, hopefully they will hire me on and I'll be in Missoula soon for the 10 day. Just hoping I don't get your old truck :biggrin_25521:

The only negative things I have ever heard about WS has been the equipment problems. They seem like a great company other wise.
I talked to a gentleman yesterday when I saw his WS truck parked here in Billings. He has been driving for them for ten years. That in it's self says a great deal. Despite the equipment problems I am still looking forward to the day I get my turn to drive for them.

That really sucks Spiritwolf. It is cool of them to realize that you want to drive!! and are hooking you up with a newer truck. I hope this one works out great. good luck to ya.

If you worked for them before, or are an experienced driver you will probably get the 3 day plan and out you go. The 10 day is for CDL school grads.

I emailed Mark Dodge and he said since I've been out of trucking over a year I need the 10 day. I've already talked to Matt in recruiting and send him my app. Just waiting to hear back now....

I believe its Kelby and Rick. If you had Dick W. before, he retired last spring.

Starting pay is 29cpm now. That's up 4 cpm from when I (and probably you) started! .. I hope they start you at least at the 6 month rate, though. That seems like it'd be fair... (and that's 31cpm now).

You were actually one of the people that affected my perception of WS as a good, solid place for me to start my driving career. That was back in Nov 2010. So thanks for sharing back then! It really helped.

    Update.
Sitting in phoenix AZ.... because dispatch thought sending me from LA to here would be the fastest way to get me to Missoula.
    :biggrin_2552:

I dunno what to say/think right now. A bit put out over this whole truck thing.
I FULLY understand rookies getting the worst trucks, that makes sense... but in my orientation, there were 7 of us... 6 got "new bought" trucks. They looked good, were clean, and ALL had around 300k miles...None of them have had any problems running...
I got a 750k truck.... FILTHY.....and have had Nothing but bad luck with it...
I have been promised a "new" truck, but can't seam to get dispatch to send me in the direction that truck is sitting and waiting for me...
So far I am loving my job.... On those few times I have been able to actually "do" my job...
other than that, frustration is setting in, and I am running out of patience for this situation....
Other than the whole old and worn out equipment issue, I think this company has promise.
But... 3000 miles... in 18 days... I can't live on this kind of paycheck...

Blown turbo... Screwed up transmission.... 9 water leaks.... 6 air leaks..... No cruise control....no heater..
drinks a gallon of oil every couple of days... pieces of the dash fall off regularly.... headlights suck....
stereo missing several speakers.... CB antenna just flat fell off...(no... I didnt hit anything... It just suddenly folded backwards over the mirror.).... A/C works most of the time, but sometimes wont turn on...
and I wont count the dirty interior against them... nor the fact that random clumps of dog (or cat) hair still infest this truck. No matter how many I have cleaned up, more keep appearing...

    old truck? dont mind...
    Dirty? I can clean it...
BUT IT MUST BE #%@$ing RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!

I am going to end up on my 1st hometime in another 2 weeks... I told my fiance that if this situation is not resolved by then, I may be applying somewhere else.

    EDIT TO ADD...
Warpdrvr.... this is truck 1714, avoid it! lol...

    Update....
Downtime. We all have it, and it can be hard to figure out something to do when driving a truck.

Well... here is an interesting place to visit if your looking to kill a few hours.
    http://www.generalpattonmuseum.com

Southern California, off of I-10... Exit 173
Open 9:30 am to 4:30 pm 7 days a week.
There is plenty of parking for rigs just past the Chevron station.
the chevron also has a Fosters freeze, just in case your tired of subway sandwiches...

The museum itself has a decent indoor display of WW2 memorabilia, weapons, uniforms, ect.
Outdoor display area has several battle tanks, 2.5 ton trucks, A DUKC, and even a Soviet riot and fire fighting vehicle.

Not a bad place to spend a few hours if your in the area.

    hup Thanks this.

I used to pass by there 2x a day when I was doing my linehaul with WS. I would drive to Desert Center and do a trailer swap and then back to SFS. Stopped at the Chevron before, but never went to the museum..

Oh, and truck 1714? That is a pretty old truck. The oldest I had was 1781. Pretty good running Volvo. Hopefully they have a decent running and looking truck waiting for you if and when you ever get to Missoula...

i had 1661 for my first few months, tried my best to haul ### and always delivered on/early, but as the problems started getting worse i asked for a load to missoula to clean out my truck...they told me they would have another truck waiting on me....they did, Im not saying threaten them with quitting, maybe just reminding them of your potential to make them money!...GOOD LUCK!
