Those smaller trucks will only go 2 to 3 years pulling a forty foot flat doing that type of work. Then it's ready for the scrap heap. Not much value in the long term, rather expensive when the trade in value is next to nothing after the final payment is made.

His situation is different than most. His wife is a neurological surgeon at UCH so he doesn't need to work, and didn't for a year. He was going crazy so he decided to buy the truck and trailer an be a "casual hauler". He has 0 bills and plans on doing maybe 40,000 miles a year. Just going to run IN/IL/OH/WI/MI.
As for choosing the truck, he wanted better MPG and so far moving 4 5th wheel campers and hauling around some bobcats and such, he is getting 16mpg but also has a tuner and some other stuff done to it. He also has a V-plow for it and plans on snow plowing in the winter as he doesn't want to haul anything at that time.
As for me, I was thinking about doing the same thing, but buying my fathers 1993 F350 with the 7.3L. It has 84,000 miles and I can get it basically for free. My only cost would be a trailer for about $12,000. I can get a crate motor for $4,500 and a new trans for $2,000 when needed and do all the work myself as I was a ASE mechanic before driving a truck.
, I passed on all the info and he really appreciates it. He should be signing up here soon so I don't have to keep doing this crap lol. -
As I said, he's not going to be running 125,000 miles a year. If he was he would have just kept his KW and stepdeck. He's only looking to clear about $1,000 week and if it's less he don't care. He doesn't new the $$$ to live off.bender Thanks this.

I thought you would marry a neurological surgeon then become a hobby trucker.
SHC Thanks this. -
So he's going to clear $1,000 a week running less than 2,500 miles a week ? Oh , you said 40,000 miles a year . Clearing $1,000 a week running less than 800 miles a week .
-
Yeah, something like that LOL.... He plans to run maybe 1 load out and back a week. I can clear $1,000 on a single LTL most days that he can fit right on his trailer. I don't think he should have problems doing it if he gets lined up correctly.

I could only wish. Only way that's going to happen is if I win the lottery, then I'll have a few trucks and only do charity work for those who need help in disaster relief situations like Joplin and Katrina.

an F550 is sterling class 6 truck with a ford body will last a long time
-
I didn't know that. It still has the crappy Powerstroke motor tho.... I told him to buy a Dodge but he wouldn't listen LOL
