Not too often I get to correct ironpony, but I will do it with a perverted sense of joy here today: When detention pays, there are two ways we collect. "detention pays when customer pays" and "detention pays when trip pays"

The first one is for just about everyone we haul for that pays detention, and sometimes you see it a month or two down the road. It is an unexpected surprise to find a couple extra hundred $$$ in the settlement.

The second one is for our dedicated accounts that have agreed to pay a certain amount per hour. The rates are usually lower, but they pay when the trip pays, and Prime collects from those accounts after the fact.

When it comes to detention, those shippers and receivers get you in and out as quick as they can. Facility managers have to track this (I have a cousin that runs a CEVA operation in Laredo, and detention comes out of her operating budget) and usually don't want to pay. They refuse to initial your time stamp, falsify their in/out records (wal-mart) and for the most part they get you out of there faster than the rest of the guys not getting detention. Those meat loads usually pay very good detention, but they often have a 24-36 hour window with a Drop Dead Time (DDT) that has just enough time for your delivery at the other end if you travel with a rocket up your tailpipe.

Bottom Line, stamp your bills if you are sitting at a customer for more than 2hrs. If they don't want to initial, write "refused to initial" and make sure you are up on your macro 1, 2, 3, and 4 as the company will look at those when considering the "refused to initial" on the bills. Failure to do this will squander away a few hundred $$$ which to me means less trips to Hooters and Outback.

    :biggrin_2551: "oh no he didn't" !!!!!

My turn, Gee this is fun

Bottom Line, stamp your bills if you are sitting at a customer for more than 2hrs.

Stamp your bills EVERY time, you never know who pays and who doesn't. I don't care if it is a drop and hook, I stamp ALL bills ALL the time

Two years ago I was AVERAGING a little over $800 per week, but you should pose that question to some of the folks currently on the company side. Don't let your greed drive this decision!

I don't even worry about detention... its nice when its there, but its one of those things that if it shows up a month later, you'd be frettin' about it the whole time if you were counting on it being there.

I realize this thread is a month old, but just wanted too add ask a question. I have no real knowledge of the trucking industry, just have always been fascinated by the big trucks since I was a kid, and spent quite a bit of time in the military driving trucks. I also have my degree in business accounting so I applaud IP's strict adherence to managing his fuel costs, in the position of an L/P that, along with your work ethic and maintenance will be the difference between making money and loosing your #####. I do have a question, will Prime, or any other trucking company that you can lease with let you use an LLC (limited liability corp) to run the truck thru? As an O/O can you form an LLC and sign on with a company such as Prime? Be safe out there, and hope profits find there way into all of your bank accounts.
