I would much prefer driving stick shift, but have a bad knee (I broke it last year, pulled quad muscle and tore ligaments too, and had reconstructive surgery). Ideally, I'd like to learn on a manual transmission but be handed an automatic to drive. Chances of that happenning are pretty low. Most companies w/ automatics do not hire in my area (upstate NY).

Right now, I'm waiting for the leg to get stronger before I decide to go through w/ schooling. I hear the clutch in the Millis Transfer training truck is extremely stiff on the leg; Stiffer than most trucks. Is that true?

I sure would hate to fall in that 30% failure due to lack of physical strength.

    #### !! I can't believe it. I just got rejected by Millis driver school in Cartersville, Ga. I applied 4 days ago, paid off my bills, got my funds together and was looking forward to starting class in Nov. My DMV is clean as a whistle, no felonies etc... Although they do have limited class space (6-8 per class), My suspicion is my age (53). Of they can't SAY this of course but this is very disheartning for sure. I live only 20 minutes from their hub in Albany Ga........###### !!!

    I'm 51 from Albany and I was hired.....but I'm pretty too.

Ever stop to think that maybe they didn't need any Albany based driver right now?

    Nah, probably not........

Keep after it and good luck!

I think the fact that were quite a few drivers sitting with no loads in the Atlanta and Albany area last weekend has way more to do with it than your age. I am pretty sure the reason is they just don't need drivers in that area right now and not to do with any age. I wouldn't take it personally at all ... try again later if you are set on Millis. Freight, accounts etc are changing quite often and that has way more to do with it than anything other than the basics of rejection like a bad DMV or work history.

I can't speak for the company but I start training next week at age 59 so I choose to believe age is not their most important criteria.

Good luck. I hope you will call Craig and ask him what you need to do to be selected for next month's class.

Hey emac, I am going to be in that class also. Drop me a line @ steveshaner@hotmail.com if you get a chance. Where are you coming from? It's about 8 1/2 for me in Lancaster PA. The way I understand it is you have a job if you pass the class/driver trainning.

Thanks for not letting me take it personally fella's !! I believe the class availability along with all the reasons mentioned by you guys was the real reason. I was told to re-apply in 6 months. I dont think so. I have since applied with Central Ref. and am back on course. Should be outa Ga in about 30 days. I am so looking forward to this experience in my life. My son passed 6 years ago and I used to tell him all the time that one day I was just gonna take off in a big rig and keep on going till I cant go no more. Thanks again my friends !!

I was accepted into Millis, but have to pay $500 up front. I was reading on this post that I can pay just $100, and $400 when I go to the class. Was wondering if it's true? I'm going to the one in Georgia.

This is the first time I read this thread. It is the first time I heard a carrier making a new hire put money up front. After all most new hires are coming from unemployment and funds are thin. If you shop around you will find much better options.

Any one can go to a community college and get a no qualifying gov't Stafford loan that doesn't have to start being paid back until 6 months after school. Most run around $4K, have better training, have job placement opportunities and best of all you are not committed to any carrier if you don't like them. If you go with carrier training which requires a commitment, most pay a motel and one meal a day and cost vary greatly.
