Thanks for the post, CowGirl. It's good stuff. Thanks for backing her up, ScareCrow. I know you shoot straight, so I now know she does, too.

I've heard Marten is a pretty good company. I don't toot them much only because they're reefer. I hate reefer understand, and I'm sure a lot of green drivers would as well. I try to steer the freshies to dry box so they can get over the shock that is a new OTR driving career just a little easier.

Again, Marten is good if you like reefer. I know some of you love it. And of those who drive for Marten, most of you love both the mode and the company.

marten not a good companey for a seasoned driver.
they are more concerned with satisfying the stock holders then the drivers.
drivers at marten have to deal with long waits at food warehouse,
waiting on the east coast days for a load beacause they don"t have a big freightbase in the n.e.,
pallet exchanges. no ez pass because all their drivers cook the log books.
they do have good equipment, and safety is a big concern to manegment they will not release a new driver until he can pass a very difficult (blind side backing ect.)road test.

 

Yeap, long waits and grocery places go together like bacon and eggs, baseball and hotdogs, or truckstop lots and piss-bottles.

Maybe companies will start to follow Marten's example. Not releasing a driver until he can perform certain skills is a good way to go. And maybe Martin could start following other companies' example, too. They could force drivers to carry the 75-lb weight around to see who is too old or too fat for the job.

Hey, here's an idea--maybe they could combine both the blindside test with the 75-lb weight test. In this mother of all tests, drivers have to hold the weight while trying to do the blind-side-back at the same time. Maybe they could throw in a simultaneous test to see if those drivers could tie their shoes while doing the other two tasks.

My point is a company like Swift will require a 75-lb weight test, but allow a green driver to train. This makes as much sense as the above mother test would. Unless, of course, the weight test is really a weed-out test in disguise, which it is.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the goal of ANY company in ANY industry to make money? How can a large company make money if the stock holders aren't there? As far as Marten being more concerned with them than the drivers, I think this statement is 100% opinion and 0% fact.

So does every other driver at every other company.

My friend Gypsy has been in and out of the NE many times in her tenure there with little to no wait. I don't ever recall her complaining about pallet exchanges ever.

99% of all drivers "cook" their log books in some shape or form. This is not Marten's reason for not having EZ Pass. Gypsy told me what their reason is, but I can't recall it right now.

I applaud them for seeing to it that only capable and skilled drivers are in their seats. However, I don't recall Gypsy saying anything about the road test being overwhelming. The only thing I recall her saying was how difficult it was for her to make the transition from an auto shift to a manual as her previous and first trucking employer (as well as mine) had all auto shifts in their fleet.

 

Hey Tip.........I'm considering various companies to drive for upon graduation from school and getting my CDL; what is it about driving refers you don't like? What's the difference?

Scarecrow........I was just curious what kind of truck driving job you have now if you are no longer OTR.........And by the way, I always appreciate your posts.
