    Dear TR Forum:

Leave it to the US Department of State to be a tad confusing. They now offer a US Passport Card in addition to the traditional book. The book is more expensive and thus is good anywhere. However, the card is significantly less expensive and is not good for "airplane and international travel." If there is anyone out there with a US Passport Card or at least knows the specifics, please enlighten me: What good is a Passport Card if it cannot be used internationally? Does this mean it cannot be used if we drive from the US into Mexico or Canada?

    Thanks,

The card is good for land and sea travel between the u.s., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean only. I use it when I go to Canada.

I suggest getting both. You can use the card to go to and from Canada while working, and if you fly out of the country you use the book.

If you can only afford one though, get the book. I just got the card last year (my company paid for it), and this year I went to the Dominican Republic on vacation. Long story short I sent my card off to get a book 2 months before leaving, and didn't get the book until 3 days before I left after a call to my congressman's office.

With the Passport Card you can drive into Canada, and Mexico.Just can't fly in and out.It is also used by people taking cruises as it is accepted at ports for boarding and returning.I don't know how it would work overseas. Not many carriers like to drive into Mexico but there are quite a few that go into Canada.
