I would not touch a Cat after 2007 with a 1000 foot pole. And really would not touch a truck period from 2008-2011, they all had problems, I had a Crapcadia I bought new, got out of it by the skin of my teeth. The newest engines EPA 2010 seem to be much better. But you should definitely research the Cats from those years. There is a reason they got out of the on road engines.

watch out for the XY shifter on the tranny it consently goes out when you go to take off you have to hold the service brake while giving it some gas dont hit the brakes too hard otherwise your transmission will clunk and jerk the truck around that is just my personal experince with the automatics

The ishift in my new Volvo does none of that. it's like driving a frickin car. I love it!

The cost to repair an automatic is much higher than a straight shift. Some drivers simply don't like an automatic. They think real truckers only drive straight shift transmissions.

Not to mention when the dang auto gets stuck between gears...it sux. I was in a construction zone in NM when the one I was driving. You have to pull over (if you can), turn truck off and re-cycle. I had to block traffic when it happened to me.

x2 on the C15 constant problems.

Not sure about the older autos, but haven't heard much bad on the ishift, they warranty it for 750,000 miles right from new, they must have confidence in it.

The automatic will probably lend you better fuel mileage, but the difference in maintenance on it will probably make that difference bunk.
On the matter of the cat engine, those motors had some serious emissions issues. I was fortunate enough to get to drive one back in '08, and that thing would run probably two weeks tops before it was something else going wrong. I have heard that cat has addressed the issue, and that they have solved some of the issues, but when I talk to the drivers that still have a truck with that engine at my company, cat still has some work to do. -
Do the math and the automatic will pay for itself in fuel savings, ESPECIALLY the Volvo one, I drove one wish I could have dumped the idiot who bought it...but I couldn't. I come into some money middle of 2013 and buying my own Volvo ( or possibly FREIGHTLINER w/o auto) then....good luck!
