The irritating part about all of it is that the more energy we conserve in the U.S. gets purchased elsewhere around the globe. So our prices still go up. Even if all trucks switch over to a alternative fuel in the next 10 years, there will be more EPA mandates placed on the guys who source that fuel to inflate pricing & therefore fuel taxes.

vehicle fuel is actually NOT the greatest consumer of petroleum fuel. Plastics are.

And surprisingly, US manufacturing is not the greatest consumer of plastics, Asia and Europe are.

Conversation I have had in the past with friends on Facebook over oil usage and the price of gas.

None of that changes the fact that LNG has less than 60% of the energy content of diesel. In fact, according to the linked Freightliner information and Westport's information, they're not even that optimistic as they're looking at something less than 50% in their applications.

Nor has the industry even settled on CNG, LNG, DME, etc. That is going to make rolling out infratructure more difficult and will likely result in regional favourites as far as what type of fuel.

Don't miscontrue what I have posted, I am all for greater efficiency, less pollution, less cost (okay, wishful thinking), etc. I fully expect alternative fuels will make significant inroads, especially as has been mentioned in local and regional fleets (I also expect some OTR to change to more of a regional-regional operation), but to think the entire industry is going to change over in the next seven to ten years is pure fantasy.

We are being told $1500 for the emissions upgrade items on the engines. The truck manufacturers have held increases down over the last few years to keep sales going.

They are still making very good money on these trucks.... Dealers have for the last 10 years made about the same no matter the prices but the manufactures are making very very good money... They could sell all the trucks at cost and still make good money off just the parts and service...

The thing I hate about using LNG is then we will be competing with what it costs millions of people to heat their homes. I don't see this as win for anyone. Thank you very much you lefty tree huggin turds!

as was pointed out to me today.

Currently, LNG and CNG and LPG do NOT have a road tax put on them.

Once the revenue is lost on the diesel, how long do you think it will be replaced on the LNG/CNG/LPG?

Once THAT happens, the benefit of running alternative fuels will be lost.

Would be nice if we could be "the land of the free" again. Now we are just another country in process of socialism.
