I am wanting to get back into a little power. I have an old palomar 450 that I would like to get repaired. I accidentally put too much into it when I was using it behind my Connex 4600 turbo and now it only keys up when I have the connex turned up over 50 watts deadkey. But I would like to have it repaired and possibly upgraded to do a little more if possible. I am also looking at a new radio to use infront of it. Something with a high/low power setting so that I can have it on high when running locally then switch it to low when I turn the amp on.

I am thinking of maybe a Cobra 29 classic or maybe get into something compact that has good sideband capabilities.

contact John "Cigar Man" Honeycutt. his business is Mountain View Electronics located at 1217 Deep Springs Road, Dandridge, TN 37725-5907 and his number is (865) 397-0536

he is located at exit 412 on I81 in TN and he IS NOT the chopshop at the loves. he is on the east side of the interstate across from the closed truckstop. he has been in the CB/ham business 60 years. he repaired my texas star 250. i went by there and dropped it off and asked him to ship it back to me when he was finished. i had it in a week. he only works from 9am to 1pm so give him a call. most of his business is mailed in items, so he will get it done and wont screw around either. my 250 needed longer power wires and it had a blown preamp transistor. the repair plus shipping it back to me was a little over 30 bucks.

i also had him do a complete alignment on my galaxy 99. he did it right there in front of me with the oscilloscope and tone generator in 10 minutes. it was amazing to watch him to it that fast. someone had removed the modulation limiter on the radio and he replaced that and set the radio so its not one of those splatter boxes you hear all the time. the compliments i get on the clear sound is amazing. give him a call. oh and the alignment was 20 bucks. you cant beat that anywhere.

i suggest the cobra 148 gtl if you want a great radio with sideband. you can get one of the older ones off ebay that is a phillipines made unit. those are the best. you can get a channel kit installed too and have a rig that will rock. here is one on there now already modified and ready to go.

I would get a cobra 25 nightwatch with a chrome case, that's a nice lookin' little radio and would do great behind that amp.

I thought about the 25 but without the chrome case. No shiny stuff in the truck. Makes it hard to see when traveling in the early evening or morning.

    Logan76 Thanks this.

For about the same price as the 29, you can get a Galaxy 919...Same size case as the 29, but along with "Talk Back" the 919 also has a variable power knob so you can lower your DK from about .5 a watt, to around 6w's...Only thing I would recommend doing to the 919 is open up the modulation some, and maybe a better Mic.

Most likely what killed your Palomar in the first place was too much DK...

    -just my 2 cents...

Go to Chuck's CB Shop in Holladay, TN on I-40 at the 126. Go 1 mile south and he will be on the right in the house trailer. Plenty of truck parking. I've been going to Chuck for about 7 years and he's never done me wrong. He has 32+ years exp and is VERY reasonable on his prices. Best CB tech in Tennessee!!!
