How many incarnations of the 148GTL are there, how can I tell them apart, and where can I find schematics to compare of them?

out of all those models, the 2 that are the most sought after are the radios that have the PLL02A and the MB8719 chipsets. that are the versions that are easily modified for extra channels by "jumping" the chips. others can be done as well, thosea re the most popular ones. and i found a few other model numbers at this sit as well. look for yourself.

Where do you find what chipset it has? Plate on back or inside?

remove the cover that has the speaker. there will be several chips on the board, and look a the numbers that are printed on the chips.
