Hello guys, first post, I was hoping I could get your opinions on my situation. I learned that a trucking company is required by the federal government to request an applicant's 10 year employment history as a requirement of hiring. In my case, I haven't been employed for the past 10 years, so my employment history is "no employment for the past 10 years". Would this disqualify me from consideration for being hired you think? Actually, for the past 20 years I've been living off my own funds from a windfall. Thanks.

It's just that. History. Put down unemployed for last ten years. That's all you have to do. Now everything is legal. When they ask you can explain windfall.

I'm trying to get started in trucking. Found out from the large companies: your lack of work history gets you declined. One recruiter said with as much as 3 months of some work history then they might be able to work with it, they will need to be able to contact the company to get it verified, and you might have to show paystubs as proof.
Suggest you call a few companies and be honest about it, and ask how many months work history they will require you to get after having none for the past 10 years. By doing that, you'd get a better idea first hand what they can work with. Then you'll need to get some job for a few months that will verify your employment.
Not sure if small or local companies have the same guidelines. From what I understand it is mostly the insurance companies who dictate to the trucking carrier what type of background profile the drivers must have. -
i was self employed for over 30 years, My accountant sent them info on that
you still must have had tax returns on your "windfall"
that should get you startedMilktanker Thanks this. -
Thanks Fellas, but would a trucking company requesting my 10 year employment history and learning that my history is "no employment" cover the company as far as the government regulation is concerned? Then if a company didn't want to hire me it would be their own discretion and not a problem with the federal mandate? My actual employment history is "no employment".
This is the actual FMCSA regulation:
Notification of previous employment:
All employers shall request and all person's applying for employment as a commercial motor vehicle operator shall provide, employment history information for the 10 years preceding the date the application is submitted. The request shall be made at the time of application for employment.
It doesn't say specifically that an applicant needed to be employed, just that the 10 year employment history has to be obtained. My employment history is "no employment". Thanks. -
Thanks Pete, actually I was a dependent on my mother's tax returns until 2007 (when she passed away). I've only started filing on my own since 2008. Would you happen to know if the IRS can provide past tax returns? Thanks again. Much appreciated.

My wife has been home for the past 12 yrs .. she just went to work to get a work history after talking to a few compaines --actually from what we found they prefer at least 3 yrs of work history....we have 3 till the kids graduate so its not a big deal.. for someone wanting to start yesterday.. It could be a serious issue..
I hope you can pay for schooling yourself with whats left of your windfall..that might help.. -
You will have to prove your story is all, so do not lie. There are going to make sure that you did not just spend the last 20 at the greybar Inn.

Most companies will have a problem with that. I started when I was 21 years old and I only had 3 years work history and put I was in High school after that.
Not sure how old you are, but if you are not extremely young. Most will bypass because that just looks to fishy like you are trying to hide something. -
Thanks to everyone for your replies.
I'm 57. I thought it would be really "fishy" if I tried to pass myself off as a self-employed stock trader. I did trade the market, but it was just my own portfolio so it wasn't really employment. Here I am being 100% honest and that might be seen as "fishy". It looks like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. Thanks.
Just a note to Hugh: I tried to reply to your personal message but the site wouldn't let me reply until I have 7 posts. I appreciate your help. Thanks.
