18yr team buying 1st truck, need advice on used truck purchase

    So you prefer a truck without DEf and has only EGR?

    Do a search on Maxxforce engines(on this forum) and see how it worked out for International with only EGR. :yes2557:

    Really, how so? Don't the '09s and '10s carry the same emissions package? (EGR , ULSD, and REGEN.) We are currently in a '09 fleet truck with 750k miles and have had relatively few emissions related problems. Interested to hear more of what you have to say and would really appreciate it.

    Thanks everybody. This conversation is really helpful. So, let me throw this out there: we are currently looking at a 2009 Volvo 780, 13 liter, 485hp, I-shift, with 3:21 rear, on low pros, with a CARB certified APU with 417k miles on it, also has an NTP engine warranty w/ 34 months/284k miles remaining. We figure at 180k miles a year, that would put us at 950k miles on the truck in 3 years when it is paid off. Reserves will be $.10 p/mile. So, please reply with opinions! Thanks!

    FYI alot of the time NTP warranties arent worth the paper they are written on

    We understand that the failure mode determines coverage, but we think it is better than going naked. LOL.

    Volvo parts are a little pricey . And truck needs to go to a dealer. Maybe a freightliner or a brand with a cummins might be the way to go. And the "010" emissions trucks get a little better fuel milage.

    What are you driving now? If you like it and it does the job your looking to do, stick with what you know.

    Little better fuel mileage. OK, thanks for that. Our 2009 Cascadia without APU shows lifetime avg of 6.4mpg. We have only been in it for the last 300k. Been in both a 780 and Cascadia most recently. Prefer the 780 but agree that Volvo parts are pricey. Sales price on 2010 Cascadia w/ ISX 15 liter, 3:48 rears, ultrashift, on lo-pros with 375k miles without APU is $7k more than sales price on the 2009 Volvo. We thought the 15 liter might be a little thirsty especially with the lower rear. What do you think?

    i was driving Team before(FAF) you have to look for a more economic truck(mpg),the fuelbill for 180k is high,6.4 for a Cascadia is not to good,(i have this with my columbia with cat) a Cascadia 011 with DD15 with 3.36 is a good deal,only this is my opinion

    Thanks for the advice. This company truck doesn't have an APU so the 6.4mpg includes idling, so not a realistic figure, but we understand your point. Afraid of that 2011 price tag...but agree it's a good choice. We have a comfortable start-up plan with a purchase at or under $75,000...do you think our attempts to be "conservative" might come back to bite us?
