If you look out your window and see your trailer (and your not backing up), that's usually a really good clue.

    What if you are turning.

But seriously keep an eye on how the trailer is tracking behind you.

Like going into a curve too fast and KNOWING that you have screwed up.. its a lot like that. If you get out of it without screwing up or killing yourself, you'll hopefully never do that again. Almost every jackknife is due to driving too fast in bad conditions. Once you have get into the problem, its really too late to get out of it with magic.

if your supposed to be going straight and you look in the mirror like your supposed to do ! you will see the trailer coming to one side in one mirror and going away in another, By then its usually to late. so drive careful keep your speed under control and hopefully you will never find out what it's like.

you will feel your truck "wiggle" like one time i was on the 84east to pasco ans hit some patches of black ice it was going sideways a little then i soon as i caught grip it straightened out and then it wiggled the other way i got off the accelerator and let it slow by itself it was close...
