I drove semi for 6 months approx. 7 years ago, went through a divorce and hung it up and went back to an office job. Well 7 years later I wanted to get out of the rat race working in an office, and I knew it would be tough driving again without going back for a refresher course or training. Well I was fortunate enough to hire on with a concrete company, which I had always wanted to drive for.
My experience so far?
1) Orientation last friday 4 hours, went very well filled out paperwork and watched videos, and then was instructed on whom my trainer would be, and which plant I would be at, great. I had however was not told I would be making minimum wage while going through training and every driver in there was totally shocked, but I figured you have to start somewhere because they said I would be working 50-60 hours per work, so that gives overtime, then once issued my truck I go to the hourly wage that they offered me.
2) Went out bought the proper clothing, and boots and any other additional items for the job.
3) Called in late Saturday to find the start time of my trainer so I could be there in plenty of time. Perfect, need to get up at 4:30 a.m. be there no later than 6 a.m. start time is 6:20 a.m.
4) Sunday afternoon rolls around, I get a call at 5:00 p.m. from HR dept, saying I would be reporting to a different plant and to call dispatch for my trainers start time, no problem. I call and his start time is at 3:30 a.m.
5) Wow, I try to sleep as much as possible, with not much luck, anyways, up at 1:30 a.m. and at that plant at 3:00 a.m. ready to go.
6) I am then informed this trainers truck is in the shop and I now have to wait until 6;45 a.m. for my new trainer. They let me clock in at 3:20 a.m. and wait, fine understand mistakes happen.
7) Trainer comes in, and we go out to do a PTI, and from the get go, nothing but negativity about the company, and I figured , early in the a.m. let go, lets go out and train with a positive attitude. All I heard all day was negativity from him, so I kept asking questions about the truck, the operation of the truck, watching every move, out on the jobsites getting dirty, not a problem. He even asked on the last load if I wanted to drive back to the plant, I said no I am good, I just really want to observe what your doing, and know the controls before driving, which was no big deal.
8) Now last nite comes, I call in my trainer is on stand by, and my name was not even mentioned? No phone calls no nothing?
Just wondering , any advice and is this normal? Greatly appreciate in advance for the advice.
Need advice and to see if this is normal for the industry

You absolutely need a refresher or just go back to trucking school. In seven years, a lot has changed.
-
construction is the worse trucking industry to try to get in. becuase construction as we once knew it. is GONE for good.
the only construction these days are highways. and an occasional business being built.
and to start for the company this late in the year. with winter around the corner. you'll be lucky to get 20 hours in. although around here. they try to get you 30 hours so you can't collect unemployment for the week.
you shoulda started in march. banked what overtime pay you can get. and have an easy winter collecting unemployment. but even overtime is a rare commodity. unless your one of the few still in the industry working on one of them highway projects.
and even at that. what jobs are out there aren't being done in the same manner they were when times were booming. corners are cut to do the job as quickly and cheaply as possible.
used to be they would tear out the road. lay new roadbase down. and then asphalt. now they take hte asphalt and recycle for roadbase. OR they just mill the surface and repave.
probably be the new way of doing things from here on out. the goodl ole days of working 60 hours a week and making 60k a year are gone. -
You driving a mixer truck or pneumatic tanker (cement) truck?

Bigjoel: Mixer Truck.

Seems like the trainer bad-mouthed you. I worked for a cement company pulling dry bulk cement, and all the trainers bad-mouthed the new drivers; not to their face, just to the dispatcher & terminal manager. I toughed it out because to pull liquid OTR, we had to go cement local first.
Another company pulling reefer OTR,the same thing; the trainers bad-mouthed the newly hired. This training was to familarize the new employees with reefer hauling, not driving, because all new hires were experienced. My trainer told the terminal manager I was talking up the union and that we should organize. It wasn't true, but I almost got fired & they never really trusted me fully after that. That trainer eventually was fired for falsifying his time card while doing local work.
