I know there are many opinions as to whether or not the gi bill should be used for cdl training and they all have very valid arguments. I'm hoping this thread will help some people decide one way or the other. I filled for the program on August 15th. As expected the government has been draggingtheir feet with it. They started processing the application someone in September meaning that it wasn't even looked at for at least two Weeks. Well for the last two Weeks I've been talking to them, after 45 minutes on hold each time, and they are waiting on a matter file to be created. Apparently they have to send it to someone else for that eves though I already have been using my gi bill in the past. Okay, so how long will that take? The last lady told me up to a month. So from the date of that call I'm looking at mid October to get the letter I need to set up training. Two months if all goes smoothly. Now the part that makes this worth it is that I get to choose where I go to school and get paid housing affluence while attending. Going with company training would have Goren me into school in as little as two Weeks and I may have been driving by now. I still don't regret my decision because I'm free to work for who I want after training, but you definitely have to have patience when working with the government. I'll keep updating as my situation changes. Any questions just ask. I may have left a lot or trying to do this on my phone before work lol.

I too went with the Vrap program.I start it in Jul and in Aug got the letter from the VA. had a school in Sep and it is now Oct still looking for payment. Found out the VA will not pay for a School that is not full time. What i mean by that is you have to go to a class full time. That is why no trucking school will take the Vrap. Most are 3 weeks or less, Some are more. But the school i went to is a good school but I will sill have to come up with 3g for the training. P.S This is what i got from the school V.A Rep. I received your voicemail and I thank you for explaining your concerns about VRAP. I am sorry what you are experiencing with the VA office but the VRAP program is new and it is possible not all of the people who answer the phones for the VA are quite up to snuff on its details. If you could list some of the problems you are experiencing with VRAP I might try to research them for you. Also, if you were told anything by our school representative that you are finding out to be inaccurate, I need to know. The main feature that I am finding out that appears to be misunderstood is how the veteran receives his/her benefits. Many veterans seem to think they will receive a monthly stipend or living allowance and that the VA pays the school too. This is not so from what I read in the VRAP regulations. VRAP pays the veteran as he accomplishes/completes the lessons. These funds are sent to the student which is how the student pays the school. The money the VA sends is tuition money, not living allowance. VRAP like the GI Bill Chap 30 Montgomery Bill, pays approximately $48 per lesson, so when the school sends Lesson Certification Letters to the VA Regional Office, they send out a check for that amount times the number of lessons completed. When the student is completed with Phase I (the online lessons) and his tuition payments have been made satisfactorily, he can then schedule for the Resident Training (Phase II). In some cases, the school will allow a student to finance a part of the tuition depending on the individuals credit score. A credit application must be completed. So if someone can help then please post. and if you know of a school that can help then post that too.

I am using the post 9/11 GI Bill, I am going to a college for the drivers training, the school is 6 weeks, the GIBill is paying the schools full cost, and giving me the housing stypin for a month and a half.

How long was the VA turnaround attending through a college? I am retiring from the Navy in April, and planning on going the same route with my Post 9/11 GI Bill. I have heard horror stories about the VA an processing, so plan on enrolling EARLY to get the VONAP processed in time.

I waited for a month and a half before I recieved my ( post 9-11 GI Bill ) approval letter to go.Depends on the time of year, When a semester is starting or has started expect a lil longer wait.As far as going through a college or VA approved trucking school, When I went to a normal college it was about the same wait time. Not sure if this helped anyone lol.

Last year it took a month to get approval for the post 9/11 GI Bill to pay for CDL classes and that was after calling weekly then going down to the local office to get them to approve it - officially.
If you are applying online for benefits through VONAPP, half the form usually doesn't go through (great information from a retired Navy Officer working at the call center) and the best advice was to go to any local office in our state, fill out the forms there and hand them in to a clerk.
The quirky thing is making sure you are applying for the correct bill - post 9/11 or Montgomery (MGIB) and which one you could use most efficiently.
Since we qualified for both bills we had to sit down and take time to make sure my classes for a CDL was covered and wouldn't short the DH for his classes for his BA at a local college, we didn't figure the BH correctly though, it was higher than we thought.

It depends on your rank and years of service so check close to all the fine print. Start with Military.com for a basic overview of benefits even though they aren't correct, it will give you a better idea of what you want to use and where.

Good luck on whatever you decide.
