I think it would be cleaner, safer and quieter to sleep in an empty trailer out in the yard then be stuck with 8 guys to a room. I remember when I stayed at the CRE dorms it smelled like mold, pooh and urine. The guy across from me had his laptop stolen and the bathroom was dirty as hell.

I stayed at the comfort inn in Dallas and at a hotel in Gary for my upgrade. My trainer actually kept me out for 50 days cause we got along so great. and yea he had picked up an older black gentleman in SLC before he picked me up but it was "supposedly" a favor to his DM and he said he'd never had two students before. but we both were glad when we got rid of "boss man" lol that's all that old guy said. and he walked so dang slow everywhere. I met quite a few company drivers that were very happy and said they were taking home about 800 a week. I sure as hell never saw that kind of money. as for the comment about trainers not having alot of experience that is true for the most part. there are quite a few drivers that finished phase one, leased, and on their next trip through a school terminal picked up a student. However most trainers that I met drove quite a bit. They didn't sleep all the time. My trainer was a beer distributor in his home state for a couple years until he turned 21 and then was with CR almost a year before I got him. So even though he was young he knew quite a bit.

My biggest problem now is having a termination and an accident on my DAC. Hey Aftershock do these dac fix places really work or do they just take your money? I can't see why CR wouldn't change my accidents to unpreventable. Its not like it effects them anymore.

Dewey, thanks for the heads about blemished DAC's and looking before I leave. I will keep that in mind. When I said I wasn't going to lease right away I meant in general. I have no plan of leasing with CRE.
AfterShock,I completly understand the lifestyle that is exactly what I want. My plan for my older years was to buy a camper and hit the road. I camp all the time and have always wanted to see this country at sunrise, sunset, and everything inbetween. Like I said my kids are in college, I am single, no real bills. I have been living out of my sister's closet and couch for the past year paying things off to do this.
Sdlm, depending on how training goes I may leave after training (it is free if I stay 6 mnths). I will look for other work first and see if they will reimburse if not, I will if I am not happy. I am not looking for a rose garden LOL. I had a family member check out the motel they are sending me to, it's not the Hilton but it will be fine. Worse case my aunt is 35 min away???? I just want to drive and starting here for free is what I have to do then I am ok with it. Thanks everyone for the info and advice I am taking it all in and I will be able to make better choices out there because of you guys.

The salt lake city school is the one with the barracks the other places have more or less reasonable hotels, if you are coming into Gary Indiana then you are probably going to Burns Harbour, IN which IMO is nicer than SLC because you stay at a real hotel. Same with Richmond, IN and Dallas schools. I never got to look much at the school in California.

I was intending on leaving after I got my refresher course (which at the time was free with no commitment) since Schneider had a dedicated route near me that they said they would hire me for, however before I finished my training England offered .38 cpm for a dedicated route just as close, Schneider was only offering .36 so I stayed put, it has worked out well for me, making between $500-1100 a week depending on what I get that week. I found lots of stuff to be concerned about when I was otr, but dedicated it really seems a lot nicer...for example my dms are not behind bulletproof glass and are in my time zone. Good luck with things.

Yes it is Burns Hourbor. I know there are more war stories but I have found some successful people there and I am following their advice on how they made it. Like I said I really want OTR at least for a few years. I am 42 and looking for the adventure. If I only make a few hundred a week for a while that's ok. I have been a wife and mother for 25 yrs and a school bus driver for the past 12 yrs. My first job was when I was 15 at the stock yards truck stop and if I would not gotten married and had 3 kids so young I would of started driving at 21. I have been waiting for years to do this. I couldn't be more excited and ready. I am ready to pay my dues and put in the miles. Thanks for the encouraging words about CRE I knew they must have some employees happy with their job

My girlfriend drives and trains for England. She initially did not want to train, but she was going deeper and deeper into the hole while running solo. So, she started to do Phase II training. After a couple of months, they pushed her into Phase I.

Had I met her before she signed a lease with them, I would have talked her out of that, but she was sold on the idea of leasing before anyone tried to sell her on it.

OP, from what my GF has told me about Englands housing facilities, I'd suggest staying with that nearby aunt of yours. My GF gets ill every time she stays at one of those hotels. And the dorms gross her out, entirely. Also, while there, avoid any establishment that serves alcohol; it IS a trap.

Incidentally, from what you said about a lack of ties, no reason to stick around town, etc., you'll probably make a great trainee. Half the girls that end up on Ms.Pikeys truck whine about wanting to go home. The two that have ended up here were moody as all get out, and mad because they didn't get some home time, because they wanted to get back to their kids. (Not that I blame them, but they did know that they were going to be away from home for a while, when they signed up.) You may end up spending a couple of days in your trainers hometown; enjoy the time off. Of course, you may also end up riding with a guy that hasn't been home in 12 years, and isn't planning on going home for another ten.

When Ms. Pikey started trucking, several years ago, she had a trainer that kept the truck rolling so much, that she averaged about 1 shower a week while on his truck. He bathed less than that. Further, he'd unbutton his pants while driving, and at the end of his shift, his pants had slipped down to his knees, and his naked cheeks would be on the truck seat. Ms. Pikey kept a special towel to sit on while she drove.

At any rate, you've already committed to avoiding the biggest pitfall with England (leasing). I expect that, as long as you keep your nose clean, and can refrain from hitting anything or anyone, you should do fine. Some former England drivers known by Ms. Pikey have managed to bail from England and gain employment elsewhere, still driving trucks. And they bailed after 6 months. (Possibly less, but I won't swear to it)
