I was wondering if anyone has ever changed out their regular 10 speed for the autoshift and if so, what all was involved? I found a used one but I'm not sure if I should buy it and make the swap.

It might be more trouble than it's worth because you'd have to wire in connections that aren't present between the engine and transmission computers. Plus you'd probably have to re-program the engine computer to recognize the autoshift system.

The one that I found is behind a Detroit and that is what I'm running. And I actually would be getting the whole truck. I'ts a wreck that is being totaled by the insurance company. So maybe it wouldn't be to bad. I haven't driven anything with the autoshift so I really don't know what to expect. I should mention at this point that I only use the truck as an RV. I put a flat deck on the back to haul my Jeep on and I pull a travel trailer behind it. What I'm really after here is making it easy for my wife to do some of the driving!!

In my opinion, for what it's worth,I'd teach your wife to drive the 10spd or whatever is in it now.I have an autoshift eaton in my company truck and from my experiences they are a headache and can scare you.I've had mine stick between shifts and leave me in a busy intersection for a few seconds before shifting after fluttering the throttle.I don't know what all you will have to convert but it'd be a pain I could imagine. They are awesome in traffic jams though. If she really wants it to make it easier and to make her feel more comfortable driving and you are ready to jump on it go for it and let us know how it all works out!!

I drove an autoshift for 3.5 months. I know some people like them, but I don't. Two of the three trucks I was assigned during that time had problems with the shifting. If the air tanks are not drained regularly sludge will build up in the shifter parts and cause a failure. Electronic glitches can also cause failures. I had a lot of very inconvenient down time due to autoshift (side of the road, middle of the road etc.). Our mechanics didn't like them either. The third truck I was in shifted fine but had no clutch. That can be dicey when you are empty and go to stop in a hurry in snow or on a wet road. The downshifting causes a lurching that will cause an empty truck to loose traction and then the ABS kicks in. Takes longer to stop. They require a different driving style to be safe. You have to shift them into N to stop in a hurry. If you drive them empty in wet conditions just like you would a maunual you'll hit something. I almost ran off of a curve in the rain I actually had plenty of time to slow down for but the truck just wouldn't slow down much. Shifting is fun, but autoshift is a terrible system in my opinion any way you look at it.

:biggrin_25513: Forget the swap! To much to change in the air system and the electronics. Better to buy what you want or teach the lady to drive the 10 !!!!

You'll have to go up to Dallas but look no further than Don Tidwell (google him up). He's fast and he should have all the parts in stock as well.
