We have a 2004 Freightliner Columbia Detroit 60 series super 10. When hooked up to the computer it shows invalid multiple codes. Just replaced the batteries and a transmission fuse. It starts with a short grinding noise like your are downshifting, then it tacks high. It does it with and without the cruise control. They have tried swapping out several parts, but nothing seems to work. The mechanic thinks it may be the ECm or wire harness. Has anyone had this problem or have a suggestion as to what it could be?

If it's a grinding noise, that sounds trans related, have them check the TCM (trans control module), not the ECM (engine control module). There might be something going on with the starter. I had an old international pickup that when she got hot the starter solenoid would trip and grind the stuffing out of the bendix. That load would eventually heat the clutch up and "let the slipping games begin."
good luck. -
Thanks, I will mention it to the mechanic this morning. The grinding noise does not last very long. The truck has 980,000 miles and I can't begin to list everything we have replaced and were hoping to have the engine rebuilt over Christmas, but we are beginning very frustrated at this latest development.

They ended up replacing the ECM and found a couple of wires that were frayed.
