What is so special about constantly upshifting and downshifting? Sure, it's fun when you are on the interstate or highway with little to no traffic. But what about heavy traffic in or out of cities. I don't know if it's my instructor who won't let me slow down and downshift in time but, according to him I am a ###### driver because I can't downshift quick enough.
My thing is, because of large cities, metropolitan areas and urban sprawls, why not drive automatics? I've driven an automatic since I started driving 17 years ago and have an excellent driving record (knock on wood). We can send equipment and cameras to Mars to take photos. We can implant silicone to make breasts bigger. We can clone living organisms. But we can't advance 18-wheelers to modern times and progress to automatics. Personally, it seems safer to me because you can focus on driving and maneuvering in tight, busy areas by eliminating a huge distraction that is up and down shifting.
Any thoughts?
Why Not Automatic?!

I drove an automatic to take my driving test .... I would drive one if asked as getting another gear all the time is additional work but I just do not like the way they shift unless one is at 80-% of load and have not driven enough to really know how all of them do in operations but if I were to buy a truck I would look for an Eaton-Fuller manual as having exact control over what gear one is in provides safety that automatics cannot attain
first time an auto breaks traction you will serve the true master thence forever more .... manuals....TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
I plan on getting auto shift in my next truck. I bet in 5 years they will be standard equipment. This is just the switch over time and guy think it makes them special to shift gears. I bet they said the same about power steering.

I think automatics are safer in general just because it allows a driver to pay more attention to driving but I have more fun upshifting and downshifting.

Because it's not a car.
If shifting is too much for you, you're in there wrong field.

Because, in general, they are unreliable. US Xpress, a company that has run autos for over a decade, has switched to manuals over the last two years. They have greatly improved over the first one I drove in 2000, a 10 speed Eaton Fuller in a W9, but they are still not there. Supposedly Volvo's I shift is the most reliable auto today, but the rest of the Volvo truck and dealer network is questionable. It seems like you're kind of whining about learning a skill. There isn't many successful places for whiners in this industry, either do the job or go home and do something else like 90% of the students in your class will do in the next year or so. Good luck.

I can upshifting with absolutely no problem, even in the ###### trucks. My can downshift down from 10 to 9, 9 to 10, and 9 to 8 pretty easily, although I grind the gears at times (not intentionally, if course). Sometimes I can get down from 8 to 7. After that, I'm near the turn or having to stop completely then start over again at 2nd or 3rd gear. Possibly, the conflict between the instructor and I is so great that I think my downshifting is so bad.
