Meanwhile, I'm trying to learn something about the sleeper, can the VIN give details about this as well? The reason is because of plastic trim pieces, which are falling apart. This relates to another issue.

Basically, I am searching for interior plastic pieces, the dash principally, because they are broken where they latch together to make a whole - stress cracking. Simply put, the dash pieces are in such poor condition that it, quite frankly, would give me pause to consider Freightliner again when it comes time for more trucks.

And my truck isn't unique because I've had the opportunity to examine several of similar vintage, and the dash plastic of EVERY Freightliner like my 2001 is in terrible shape. Worse, the prices for replacement pieces are absurd. Not just out of line, but enough so that it feels like gouging. For example, the two piees, which enclose the sterring column, one is over 50 bucks and the top piece is well north of $150, call it close to $250 for both! Why do I suggest it is gouging? here's why.

Take an AC vent, which Rane offers in chromed plastic (not that I care about the chrome) for $7-8 each but are $35 from my local dealer. That's 400-500% more! The only shame is Rane doesn't offer more bits and pieces else I wouldn't care about FL bending me over. After all, getting in and out of the cab leads to the plastic around the column getting bumped a lot more than in a car and I feel these peices if they're going to be lightweight, e.g. designed to a lower standard, should also be priced for frequent replacement.

Anyway, based on this experience I don't think buying a new Freightliner when it comes time to add more trucks would be in my interests, which is a shame as otherwise it's a fine piece of equipment.
