Finally, as of January 31st, 2013, my "careless driving ticket" will turn 3 years old, and I can stop driving for bottom-feeder companies! (I hit a mailbox at a rural weigh station.. dumb, I know.)

Having been out of the mainstream for several years, I started looking online at "normal" trucking companies again, and found this website. I've been reading a lot of stuff over the past several weeks, but I guess I'm looking for more specific information. And you all seem to know your stuff.

I'm looking for suggestions for company driver positions, and since the last couple years have been hell, I've come up with a list of things that I'm looking for in a company.

First and foremost, my wife rides with me, and has for almost 5 years. She doesn't drive, but would have to be able to ride with me from day one.

Because it's the 2 of us, we'd prefer a company that has larger trucks (i.e. Volvo 780's, etc.), but it's not mandatory.

We need a company that has runs to the Bay Area in CA, so we can see the grandkids now and then.

I would prefer reefers (longer runs, imh experience), and an APU would be awesome.

We would prefer to be based somewhere along the I-40 or in Texas or California.

We live in the truck, so home-time isn't an issue whatsoever.

I like longer runs, but don't mind some shorter ones either, as long as they're not ALL 3-400 trips.

I really don't like the Big Brother aspect of electronic logs, so don't really want a company that uses them. (I'm not one of those to run double books at all.. but I like a little wiggle room, you know.)

I-Pass, EZ-Pass, etc. would be nice.

My wife would like a company that is pet-friendly too.. our dog passed away almost a year ago, and she's been making noises like maybe she'd like to get another.

A company that 1099's isn't a problem, as I've been dealing with that for several years now.

I know I'm new here (wish I'd found you all before), and I don't have a lot of credibility in the Forum as yet, but after reading lots of posts over several weeks, I know this is the best place to ask questions. A huge contingency of knowledgeable truckers is a great place to belong.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.:biggrin_25514:

You are asking for a lot. I doubt if you find what you are looking for. You have big expectations, and very unrealistic.

    1. You want a big company with big trucks with ez pass/pre pass and no electronic log. Good luck with that one.

    2. You want a big truck for you and your wife. + a Pet. Good luck with that one as well Hopefully if you find 1 you can afford the large deposit they have for a pet.

    3. To have 8 years and you actually think there are non bottom feeding companies just willing to give you all your desires. Come on man. Hope you find what you are looking for. But you might have a better chance at the lotto.

Also good luck with getting on with a decent company at the beginning of the year, because they are usually on a hiring freeze because of the slow freight. Hope somebody can help you though. God bless

I guess I should make it more clear that I'm NOT expecting all of these things. (As I said in the post, I would "prefer" or would "like.") Sure, we'd all like the "perfect for me" company to drive for, but I'm not expecting it. I was just hoping all the knowledgeable people on here might have some suggestions. I'm looking for a company that has at least SOME of the things I'm seeking... I think it's a good idea to know what you're seeking when you go looking.

Thanks for the info about the hiring freeze. I do realize that it's not the best time to look, necessarily. It's just when my "careless driving" falls off.

He doesn't want E Log's Marten is out of the question, and they do a ton of short hauls.

Holland Enterprises out of Fargo, ND. Long length of haul, all reefers, all APU equipped, rider from day one and pets too. All Freightliner Cascadia condos. They run all 48 and do a lot of coast to coast. 1500 watt inverters and fridges in most trucks, EZpass and PrePass. They run 40 quite a bit, I see them all the time going to Cali and Flagstaff and pretty much wherever else I run and they hire out of Texas. They do have elogs but from the drivers I have talked to, the load planners do a great job. If you don't have to go home, you could make a pretty good chunk of change there. Every driver I have talked to said that the only time they sit is when they go home or on a reset. Their website is www.hollandent.com, it shows their hiring areas and other info. Hope this helps, sounds like a good fit.

I know he doesn't want elogs. I noticed he said he wants wiggle room; that's what the lawyers look for in case of an accident, is the wiggle room the driver used. Example, if you used elogs, you would not have been at that spot where you had the accident; you used wiggle room and that put you at that exact spot and caused the accident. This is not an eggageration. I know a trucking accident investigator and he said that's one of the first things they look at for a lawsuit.

You probably consider Swift a bottom feeder, but they have terminals in Cali, big sleeper trucks on LP, pets and passengers OK with LP, a lots of freight, etc. They do have E-logs, though. Wasn't as bad as I thought they were going to be. Actually like them now because of the ease of logging and peace of mind when going across scales, they rarely get looked at. Money can be really good or really bad, but that depends on you.

Epes is a great company! But wants a pet and run west. Those may not fit. If he has questions he can pm me. Best of luck!
