    Just a quick update.

The head gasket was definately torched around #5 and there is "significant" coolant damage to the #5 liner. Fortunately the head tested fine, so rather than put old parts (600K/mi) back in, I'm opting for the "Gold" kit which will amount to a complete in-frame.

I also told 'em to double check the internal harness and jake solenoids.
The results: two of the solenoids were not "firing" properly, and there was a break in the harness leading to the #2 injector.

CAT also told me the turbo was cracked. It's 1700/apx for a factory re-man., but I'm not so sure I want to go that route. The last time the ol' girl was on the chassis dyno, there was 674hp hittin' the pavement @ 34psi. Would I be OK with the re-man, or would I benefit from switching to something else?

Thanks Superhauler! Unfortunately, I have no idea who Kurt is. Would you be able to PM his info to me?

    Yes, and no.
I've been taking to the CAT dealership for two reasons; 1) they are the only outfit around with a chassis dyno, 2) I wanted the peace of mind of a nationwide warranty. Unfortunately, because of the PDI box I have no idea what kind of warranty I'll end up with.

    Cat sdp Thanks this.

Man, I truly LOVE the PDI tune! I saw increases in power (514 up to 674) and economy (5.5/6 up to 7.3/8 ).
The only thing I would have done differently would be to have Mr. Haney do the tune rather than PDI. I joined this site after I had made my purchase, but since then have read too many good things about his tune files, to the point of slightly regreting having the PDI box instead of Mr. Haneys. But the money is spent and I am very happy with the results. I run the West Coast and there isn't a hill I run that can't be pulled at 60mph! I just drop my split, turn on the engine fan, and re-engage the cruise......

The factory turbo will not survive with the engine producing 674 hp to the tires. In a earlier post you stated this was a PDI Stage 2 tune, is this correct? Or is it a Stage 1 tune?

Did the quote on the turbo from the CAT shop include the core charge? Also did they say they'd give you a full core credit with the housing being cracked bad enough that they felt you should replace the turbo?

The CAT dealer is going to want to flash your ECM with a LOW NOX file to be able to give you a warranty on the rebuild. In fact I think they'll flash it regardless of whether you have them do the warranty paperwork or not. You need to remove/replace the ECM before they flash it with a LOW NOX file. You'll need a spare 5EK ECM for them to download for warranty purposes and the LOW NOX file.

I'll send you a PM with my number

    Thank you Mr. Haney!

My appologies for possibly misleading you. The PDI box is a Stage 1. I wanted the Stage 2, but William said it would blow the turbo up...
CAT didn't say the thing wasn't servicable, in fact they were talking about putting it back on. I was the one who questioned them about putting a cracked turbo back on, and couldn't that lead to a possibly catastrophic faliure? But the manager did not mention anything more about it or exchanges/cores, just $1650 for a reman turbo if I want one....? I did ask them about a few of the upgrades I've read from some of your postings (600 cam, B/W turbo), but they were pretty adamant about a stock rebuild, other than "if you buy it, we'll install it"

Also, they are indeed FULLY aware of the aftermarket ECM, and have been informed several times not to fuss with it. I do still have the factory computer in my garage, with the Cal approved Low Nox file.
