Believe it or not. Some of us are not out here for the money. We love our Job. We do our job the best we can. Even if there are no cheering crowds to greet us. Even if we don't go home and roll in the dough. Even if we are not recognized in our companies news letter as driver of the month. Just knowing we have got our product to its destination. Safe and is still in the condition that is was when the load was put on is our joy. Every mile is a new adventure. Every close call avoided is a blessing. To keep food and a roof over our families head is the reward. Roll on 18 wheeler Roll on. 18wheelerrrrrrrrr.

I friend of mine went to an hourly paid daycab job hauling car parts to be home more. I don't think he realized he was getting into 14 hour days and a 60 mile commute that comes out of the remaining ten hours. That leaves him 9 hours to eat, shower and sleep. Kids are getting ready for bed when he gets home and are still in bed when he goes to work.
He was getting more rest, more money and saw his family about as much the way he was running before; 5 days out and home on weekends.airforcetoo and Dinomite Thank this. -
A lot of the local jobs are tough and hard work but a guy can keep his eye open and get lucky occasionally--I did and landed a local job and do 8 hrs daily M-F and clear $800 weekly.
I wouldn't quit a job for any local job but there are good ones out there.airforcetoo Thanks this. -

As someone who has battled his entire adult life to look "long-term", I'd advise you to do just that. It's sometimes difficult, and seems to be increasingly so relative to the level of stress in your life at the time. We tend to look for short-term solutions the tighter it gets. Man, have I been guilty of that more than once.....
Hang in there, man....we may kid ya about it, but a bunch of us have been there, done that, and got some ugly t-shirts to show for it!RALPHMANBEARPONY, 7-UP, airforcetoo and 3 others Thank this. -
I agree and a lot has to do with location.

I don't know what amount of money would compel me to want to work at Dollar General. Most of us that have been doing this long term aren't suited for that type of work. The average veteran truck driver doesn't relish the idea of spending extended periods on his feet or being cooped up inside a building all day.
We are accustomed to an environment that allows us to eat, drink or smoke in the workplace. We like being able to talk on the phone, nap etc. just whenever we please. Perhaps you haven't reached that point yet, but if and when you do, you will understand why we scoff at the idea of doing anything else.
Just do the best job you can, try to make wise choices, and the money will follow.Dna Mach, machoboricua100, formertaxidriver and 2 others Thank this.
