Engine fan

    So, I never knew bout this. I was talking to some drivers at Little America WY the other day. And they were talking about going down mountains. If you re picKing up speed on a grade and wanna slow down and you have your jake on turn on the fan and it'll slow you down quicker. I tried it and it works, thought id share the knowledge since this is what this forum is for.

    I haven't had a switchable fan in quite a while, but yes, the air brake does help. One of the trucks I had for a time had the fan come on when the Jakes were switched on.

    Yup, my engine fan kicks on if the Jakes are on and the RPM gets to a certain threshold.

    Well, on my pete it has a manual auto switch. I know some freightliners don't have it, unless you have a shop tie it in with the jake.

    The engine fan will also slow you down considerably when climbing the mountain.

    Yes it'll slow down going up also I was told you lose somewhere between 25_50hp with it on

    Yep, some guys like to flip the fan on manual when approaching the hill but I would just drop a gear and leave the fan on auto to prevent dropping power which just keeps you climbing that hill longer from low power.

    in the old 387s, they disabled the switch, because ######### drivers would just keep it on, not only killing the fan, but you lose 1-2 mpg on flat land with it on, it causes such a drag on the enigine.
