I'm interested to hear the numbers. Assuming you already own a truck and trailer outright, how many loads will you need to haul to pay for insurance, heavy use, IFTA, etc? This would of course be after paying for fuel, maintenance, and paying your driver.
If the numbers work out, the bottom line is reefers haul dry and reefer, dry vans haul only dry goods, so the choice there is obvious.

Just do the maths mate work out the average pay for a load minus the fuel and you've got your profit then deduct any other expenses you'll soon see if your still viable.

Dry van. Reefer freight off the boards pays the exact same low rates as dry plus reefer fuel coming out of it. Boards are only a stopgap to fill in gaps. Not a long term plan to success. Long term with good contacts dry van can pay just as good and even better than reefer with less expense. Of course you're going to have to use that noggin to figure out how. My vote is dry van. Many of the lucrative dry van loads I haul won't go in a reefer. That is a 2 way street but most drivers think anything dry can go reefer, wrong.. What freight are you familiar with? That is what you know and where you should find the money. Don't listen to naysayers who say all dry van is cheap. They simply don't know what to do with a box.
