Just make sure they pay you as an employee on a W-2.
In many cases like that the company likes to pay you 1099. And if you are driving their equipment then you are not a 1099 contractor but an employee.
They may get away with paying that way for a few years, but the IRS has hired hundreds of new auditors to look for just this type of thing.
Otherwise it may be a decent opportunity.
Breakdown is not a huge issue unless they do not have the money to pay for repairs. You will need to figure out how to fix as many things as possible on your own, so you can get off the road and to a shop when needed. Road calls, especially after hours ones are very expensive. So need to be avoided.
Detention and breakdown pay are normally not paid in small company's. Layover sometimes is.
Try for percentage pay if possible. 25-30% is fairly common.JimBob24 and Panhandle flash Thank this. -
i'm finding that our mileage drivers are making more then i was on the 25% scale.
they get paid for all miles. i only got paid for loaded miles. and sometimes that deadhead was upwards of 300 miles. -
CD, Thank you. It is their tractor. They are offering per mile, not percentage. Still in negotiating stage. I am pretty handy when it comes to repairs, but am not a mechanic. Have other oars in the water if this does not succeed, but kinda like the small company idea.

Thanks Snowwy. Don't know why they do not offer a "Thank You" option, but I appreciate the input.
