We travel with a small dog and constantly clean the windows of nose prints. No slobber but still nose prints can obscure your vision. Mike always has the radio on, usually so quietly I can barely hear it, which is fine by me, but it's good for knowing you're coming up to an accident, etc.

We try to stick to the Flying J stops - they seem to attract the more decent of the bunch (and Big Stop in Canada) and so far we haven't had any problems there.

I cant agree with you more!!!! im fairly new to trucking 9 mths. And my truck hasnt always been spotless but it has never been nasty or unsafe. I have seen alot of nasty looking drivers in truck stops and rest areas! but i have seen alot of professionals.

I guess if javelinjeff is right, you would not have hit the ditch if you had the cb on and was listening to it and acting accordingly....:yes2557:

guess you didn't read the part about coming over the rise at 75mph and not having enough time to react on just the visual-all these wisecracks, yet a cop is in the hospital--i'll bet he would agree with what i'm saying. my point is that we need to get back to the old ways of watching out for each other and communicating hazards to each other, thats all.maybe i'll learn to speak Spanish because those guys DO watch each other's backs, inform each other about hazards, etc. too bad the "american trucker" doesn't do this anymore, too busy to care about others! unfortunately if i'm gonna go the "habla espanol" route i'll have to stay in CA. I'll take this one step farther, no one has come up with a good answer as an alternative to what i said could have prevented this-one of you even called the driver a "loser" because he hit the patrol car----it's because he didn't KNOW ABOUT IT---he would have if he had the radio ON. as to your going in the ditch--that was your own doing,i don't think another driver could warn you about that, unless you were dozing off at the wheel.

I read it. I still don't see it.
First thing is probably lack of attention. This may have been caused by cell phone, text messaging or looking at computer. The driver should have noticed by doing the proper driving technique of looking ahead of the truck and noticed the traffic was slowing down. The second clue would have been the traffic flow on the other side. The driver may have had his turned down because of some other conversations.

There are many sides to the CB usage. When I started driving my trainer told me to have it on. Personally, it was a major distraction because of the many CB Rambos. I would have it on to listen to bear reports and traffic. Most of the time, I only would hear social talking from other drivers about what they did on time off, cars they like, bars they like. Most of this could have been on other channels.

I disagree that a CB would have helped.

I have over 1 million miles and the only time my radio is on is when traffic backs up or I am running with someone and we are on another channel.

Just so you know. Most accidents are caused by driver inattention.

    Causes are:
    1. Eating, drinking.
    2. Messing with the radio.
    3. Talking on the phone.
    4. Watching DVD or TV.
    5. Email on Computers.

This is just to name a few.

let's see- what part of "NORTHBOUND,JUST PAST THE BRIDGE AT THE 78 YARDSTICK,THERE'S A BEAR BLOCKING THE HAMMER LANE BECAUSE OF AN ACCIDENT BETWEEN TWO FOUR WHEELERS AT THE 79 YARDSTICK,BACK IT DOWN,TRAFFIC IS MOVING ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER ONLY". thats what everyone was hollering on the radio, and those that were listening did so! but yes,not paying attention had a role in this one AND the bear should have set up where his car was visible from a distance-i agree with those other causes of accidents too. even some 4 wheelers almost nailed the guy waving the flag after the cop got hit,but i think many get my point so i'll let it go at that.
