Hello,
I have been reading the forum for sometime now and trying to get a good idea of what the trucking industry is like.
I have a brother-inlaw who is a career Trucker, and I used to go on runs with him when i was younger. I am not totaly without any knowledge of trucking......but almost.
With downsizing at the company I work for (GTA area) it is only a matter time before I need to decide on a career change. At the age of 47 it may prove difficult to gain employment in the same industry (dont laugh - I'm in marketing) I was thinking of going to a reputable driving school to gain my AZ license and hopefuly have them help me with job placement.
What should I expect and would it be possible to gain employment with no experience and possibly be an O/O.
Your input will be most appreciated.![]()

Do your self a huge favor do not buy a truck till you have two years exp! This for your protection! You will understand the industry better. And ryn your fictional truck on paper for a few months! . Epes hires out of Atlanta. Great company. Hires from select sschools so check their site. Once ready they have one oc the best lease deals .

What is your living situation and home time needs? If you MUST be home every night then you will need a local job. If you can be out a day or 2 at a time you may want to look at companies that do Toronto to Montreal and return. There is a ton of those runs. If you want to go over the road, you may be gone for weeks at a time. Over the road you will take home more per check, but also remember you are eating in truck stops which chews up money quick. Don't even consider buying a truck until you KNOW you will stick to it and how you will make money with that truck. Just do it, enjoy it, on someone else's equipment, learn, see the country, then begin running numbers. Lots of information on this site to help you when you get to that point.

Once you have a couple years experience you can choose where you want to work. As an employee you can change employers quite easily without any financial consequences. As an O/O its more complicated, you have to be very careful when choosing a company. You can't jump ship as easily and you can end up being nickel and dimed into the poor house by the company you work for.

Thanks for the advice gokiddogo,
My home and financial situatuion is good.
My PERFECT plan would be to be to buy a used truck (spend approx. $60,000.00) run it for approx. 6 years maybe 4 or 5 days max. a week (OTR preferably). I would also need to find a company with no experience other than having a good driving school as experience.
Is there a company out there who would hire a mature driver (no bs) but also no experience. -
As long as you go to one of their apptoved schools, then 6 weeks of training. Check out Epes! Home weekly, may be a fit?
