The majority of places that you'll call will say exactly that. Come in and fill out an application. If you're willing to do that, you may actually be willing to work. A lot of people may or may not know this, but your "interview" starts from the moment you walk in the door, even if to just fill out an app. They may be hiring, you wouldn't know unless you were actually willing to go down there. I've hired people before. I was put in a position to do that. And I'd say the same thing. Come and fill out an app. And we'd see how you were dressed, your attitude, the way you carried yourself. If you passed that, you're already on your way to consideration. With today's job market, employers can be picky. Very picky. And if you're already willing to do something as simple as taking time out of your day to "merely come fill out an app", you're showing that you really want a job and not just going through the motions.

wow your good at making assumptions. When i was an emt my intructor said never assumez it makes an a.s.s. out of you and thats what you sound like. First im not making calls from my couch, driver. Im calling from the knside pf my truck. I live in nj. if you never been here, its a very crowded state with numerous trucking companies.i dont have the time to apply to a company on the fly in hopes they are hiring. Im looking for a better company to join, not just another job. Second, she is a receptionist. She should know or atleast ask someone. Even of she said, "sir, i dont know, km very busy right now." Thats not a problem, but the problwm i have is being disrespected. I dont treat people like garbage and i dont want it in return. I understand everyone's veiw on here about applying and I agree with it all. But just to re state my point, i dont have time to drive to a company and filled out an app and turn in my credentials ( abstract, medical card, i even have a resume ) for a company that isnt taking anyone one. If they arent hiring what good is that gonna do for me now. Also my whole argument, isnt that the lady is lazy, or they arent hiring, but was just to inform drivers who might consider this company to be aware of my experience. Its something they should just have knowledge. Thats all this is posted here for. And driver, if i was sitting on a couch, and she said come in and apply.. then I probally would have.

I agree with you on the moment the interview begins but the phone wench isn't the hiring manager or recruiter. Everything else you mention regarding dress, etc. is -after--the-fact- and doesn't apply to a phone inquiry. Whether or not I'm dressed like a slob or an executive has no bearing or relation to whether the company is hiring or not. That's the bottom line. The driver didn't ask "Will you hire me?" He simply asked if the company is hiring. If a company isn't hiring MOST would say something to effect of "Come on down and we'll hold on to your application should a position open" or something relative, like "No, we're not hiring" or "No, we're not hiring but we are always accepting applications. I would have blown you off too if you gave me the same reaction IF it was a long drive to the company just to find out, no, you're not hiring right now but will keep the application on file "in case' something should open in the future since it's a waste of time. Should something open "in the future" chances are the driver is already working for another company by the time they get around to it. What's "going through the motions?" An Internet inquiry, a phone inquiry? Most companies have an online site where one can submit an application or a fax line and a many companies are nowhere near the driver and some are in other states. We can agree to disagree but I side with the driver in as much as I know right away if it;s NOT going to be a good fit and based on her curt attitude, it would not be a good fit for me. Respect is earned not given and it's a two-way street. You want the best drivers and the cream of the crop? Then treat them like you'd want to be treated.

Exactly 900,000 and this company that i called isnt exactly a top 10 on my list that hiring or not i would apply to. Believe it or not i have a top 10 that if something im jumping in there. Ex: us foods, mclane. This is a take it or leave it. They arent nationally knpwn or even locally known. But i figured ill call up and see if i can apply as for a time being. Like a stepping stone as i wait for one of my top 10s to open up. But, drivers, like it all boils down to, im not losing sleep over not working for this company or bc she was rude. I figured id post this so someone who is thinking of apply ( probally from jersey ) reads this they can be like, "oh, ok" its just my exp. With supply one. They might be a gpod company, dont knpw dont care, someone else will now have an idea about them based on this, nevertheless. bottomline, s.h.i.t attracts flys. Want drivers who dont give a hoot about trucking and its just a paycheck then be a s.h.i.t. company. You want a long line of drivers who are good drivers and want to work for your company then be an outstanding company with good attitudes and decent perks.

Bottom line is; if YOU want a job....YOU need to get YOUR lazy butt in there and fill out an application.

The "Receptionist" HAS a job....and can barley give a crap about YOU.

Stop whining on a computer keyboard, and go fill out an application---that is the only way for them to know that YOU are looking for a job.

    Forgetaboutit!

When we run an add, my number is the one listed.

I get a ton of calls from guys all saying they have the experience I'm looking for.

When asked it they want to coime in and speak w/ me and fill out an app, most are eager to get out address.

Then they do not show up. In NJ after the initial 26 weeks of unemployment they need to give information of at least three attempts to find a job each week in order to collect the remaining 20 weeks.

It gets old real fast when you answer 30 - 50 calls a day and only have one or two apps after a week.

You do not know how many calls she had already that day.

She is likely saying exactly what her boss told her to say. Don't get down on her. She's not a recruiter. Anyway, as you must know, the way that the staff talk about you after you are gone determines a lot about whether they hire you or not. I know this from various job hunts in the past. I actually think I got my most recent job by being personable and intelligent, and even "fun" around the recruiter, and the last trucking company receptionist I dealt was very charming and helpful. Strange to say, I have not met any jerks in the entire trucking business except my backing instructor. I have been told to fill out an app before they talked to me-- but those were my fall back /plan C type companies-- and I did not care about them anyway. I might some day so it is not a good plan to burn bridges after you.

I can see a couple good points about going in to fill out an app, being from a more rural area I called and asked most companies if they were hireing though. Nothing like a 100 mile round trip just to fill out an app for someone thats not hireing. Every time I needed to go to town I filled out 10-20 apps, its not trucking but had a receptionist given me that kinda answer for the type of work I am qualified for, I wouldnt have wasted my time going in to fill out an app, let alone makeing a special trip to do so. That kinda area may be different. IDK.

Her answer could have been "let me transfer you to HR, as i dont really know", that after all IS her job, fielding phone calls to the proper ppl and if the company is to small for an HR person, then more than likey the receptionist would know.

Rude well, what one person takes as rude another might just think curt and doing their job, depends on all the facts, which we will never know because as someone else said her boss could have told her to tell ppl to come in and fill out apps, but not to answer if they are hireing.
