One thing I don't miss is having to drive slow just to make enough money to survive. No I do run fast but I also am not the Trk who seems to be the speed bump on the interstate. As for own authority, I don't want that headache to deal with as its not that much more than what I get know. Picking loads ads stress and takes time and more work to figure out. I like letting the company do that and I can do what I love. Drive. I find company drivers at my company make almost what I do after business expenses are taken out, but I get to drive a much nicer Trk. So all things have a trade off.

It's sort of like, Yeah you are in a bad deal. But, Here is how you can make it better! -
Well all I can say is I should have stayed company saved and then bought my own truck instead of haviing to wait an additional 2yrs after I left to get where I am at now.
dirtycurty26, mama mia and Arkansas Frost Thank this. -

I guess I posted too quick earlier. It's not just independent that us new guys can't afford, there is also the fact that the better companies require 1-2 years experience. I know there is more money out there, but not for newbs. The choice for someone new is company driver or lease with a starter. There is still a lot you can learn leasing with a starter because you have to run accounting the same, and you get a real good idea of what it costs to run a truck.
Do we make as much as someone running for a better company? no, of course not. But I'm making more than I was (by a considerable margin) and getting used to running efficiently to maximize margin.dirtycurty26 Thanks this. -

That is why it is good to get the whole picture. You only get a small glimpse on what it takes to operate a truck when you lease one. Knowing the pros and cons the success and failures will allow a person to best decide what option to choose. I dis agree with passions statement because with 1 yr experience you can work for landstar. At 2 yrs you can lease your truck on with most companies. I could have stayed company saved read up on the owner operator thread and been way ahead of where I am now instead of playing catch up. That was why I made my statement in a previous post. It is true it sucks in the begining of any career that happens in all fields not just trucking. We inform to help others so they can best decide on how to proceed and to point out any potential pitfalls. Or disasters they might encounter or sucesses one might have. What is good for one driver is not necessarly good for the other that's why its good to have both pros and cons and by sugar coating and saying somthing stupid like I thought this was a current driver thread doesn't. Give potential drivers all the info they need and is not why this thread or the first thread was created. It was created to give youna complete picture both the good and bad, the successes and failures. Info that maybe a trainer or the company failed to give you. Like how to chain, what do I do to get my tandems to slide if they are stuck, etc

JJ, I don't know if I formally thanked you before so... Thanks! I went all the way back to the original Central threads when I was researching and coming on as a company driver for a year has always been the plan. You were not only the first thread but also the first intelligent voice i read about Central. Your frustrations and successes with the company were clearly stated and it made me realize everything here is going to be what you make it. So far that has held true. After year one I was actually going to switch to a local company for another year, sell my house, and then become O/O if I enjoyed it as much as I thought I would. Things have gone well and I've gotten a lot of good knowledge from here and from my trainer. I still love it, and everything has worked out. It is just as hard as everybody said being away from the kiddos, but I go to bed feeling accomplished every day. Wish I hadn't waited this long to take a shot at the industry but on the flip side maybe I'm doing well because I'm a little wiser than I was ten years ago. Also finding out there are other ways to get a truck and who knows what will happen next year. For now I'm just gonna keep the hammer down (all the way to 65!) and enjoy every mile.
jjranch Thanks this.
