It was just like the one that Condo Cruiser provided you..stating that I couldn't hold the company responsible if I was injured in an accident. I forgot to put that they also gave me a copy to take with me. My son also went out with my husband, and I had to sign that one as well because I was his guardian, along with give them a copy of his birth certificate proving his age for the insurance. He paid $25 for the week to take a person out with him that was 12 or older.

A rider policy cost me $100 a year when I had my authority. No biggie. If your insurance person doesn't know this stuff off the top of their head, I'd find a new insurance person that specializes in trucking.

Kinda awkward even with having insurance they would ask you to sign a waiver, I guess it's all about protection.

Forty is correct. Your insurance guy should know this stuff. Only potential issue is you may have insurance that will not allow it PERIOD. And the ones that add it are going to want to do it across the board. So they will increase your liability for all trucks. We are in the process of negotiating a new policy. None of the insurance has offered a "trip" coverage for riders or that we can list what trucks we want to have coverage on. It has been an all or nothing.

The insurance helps cover any medical bills that might occur if the individual was to be in an accident. The waiver states that you cannot sue the company or hold them responsible because of the accident.

True enough. Consider this tho...... your carrier rates your policy based the information you have provided. They calculate the risk and price accordingly..... now if you throw in a wild card ( like a rider ) then you have increased their exposure to risk with the benefit of premium. Failure to disclose is one of their fav, get me out of trouble claims. Gets the carrier off the hook for payment.

The only legal ( without authorization or policy ) rider is a stranded CDL driver and you are giving him / her a ride to the nearest facility to the best of my knowledge. Some co policies are tighter than that. No riders, no time, no way.

    Good luck

Insurance guy here!! Passenger Accident Liability is available for about $250 per truck per year. It is fairly minimal coverage but at least provides some coverage if anything happens. AIG has a program along with a few others. Empire ( Zurich ) used to have a program but discontinued it unless you have the whole truckers package with them. It was around $200 per unit.

I realize this sounds harsh. But, why are you operating a company without knowing the rules? It is your job to know, or at least be familiar with all the regs that effect your business.

Doesn't matter how professional or experience you are, we all learn new things as we go. Nobody knows everything 100% the day we start any business. You'll not know how hot or cold water is unless you put your own foot in it, same thing in any business. I am familiar with alot of regs but not 100% and i believe nobody knows all about anything and that's why we have forums and other sources where we can help each other.
I never had a driver asked me this before and when someone asks me something that i don't know on top of my head, then i look for advice and direction to do things correctly. I like to protect him and myself and do it right, I know some small outfits don't really even care who rides and who doesn't. We all should help each other on information especially o/o and small companies grow and succeed otherwise everything will be eaten by bigboys as how things are going.
