each state has their own way of doing it, in TN. you test 1st they put hasmat on your license then give you the number to call to get your fingerprints done. you have 60 days to get the fingerprints done if you don't do it in that time they supend your hasmat

    CHECK with your state dmv.......

I believe you have up to 6 months from the time you are cleared. If you don't take the Hazmat test within 6 months, you have to pay for another fingerprint.

I just passed my hazmat test two days ago in Wisconsin. I go Monday for fingerprints. They told me they send my info and prints to the FBI. Who does the background check. That I should have Info in up to 14 days.
I am assuming when i get my new license in the mail, it will show h on it.

That's incorrect. You fill out the hazprint application, you get called in for fingerprinting. Background check is done. Then when you get the approval letter or email then you go for the vision and written test.

    Look at step #5

To the OP that approval letter is good in any state. It is a federal background check. I would wait until you get back home.

let me say it differently as I don't think I was that clear. I just went through this. The Haz Mat endorsement and the background check are two different things. The HazMat endorsement is good for different times in different states but the DHS Background check is good for 5 yr. The dates both need to be renewed probably won't be the same. Mine are different by a year as I moved to a different state and the renewal dates were different from my previous state. I mentioned keeping the letter as proof that it was done as I don't believe in throwing this stuff out. The DHS, and it says it right in the letter, will notify your state. I renewed my CDL 2 yrs ago and just did my hazmat endorsement. I had to get another copy of my Drivers License with the updated hazmat background endorsement which cost me 10 and I had a much better picture to boot! Something that makes no sense to me is being able to have the hazmat endorsement on the license but if you don't get the background check done you can't use it. I guess you can get it in case you might need it sometime in the future but it seems silly to me to do it this way.
