Stevens has a high turnover rate (over 102%). They blow a lot of smoke at new drivers and have the system all figured-out how to move freight cheaply with eager-to-be truck drivers. Any new student today should be starting at no less than 32 cents a mile. The head of recruiting is nothing more than a skilled con man. This is a place to start-but move on as soon as possible.

 

You just explained their business model and they make no secret about it. Recruiting in any company is a sales dept that is commission based and all salesman are skilled con men, doesn't matter if they are selling cars, vacuums or CDLs. No one forces students to work at any company, it is a choice they make. I don't see electric fences or lookout towers around the yards of Stevens, CRE or Swift to keep people in. The market supports 26c per mile for students and that rate will only go up when demand drops and they are forced to pay more to attract new drivers. You force a pay rate on a company and they will just get that money back from you another way.

I agree with you 100%. What I can't understand is the 400,000 driver shortage in the country-according to the government. It seems the government has thier head in the sand concerning the whole hiring system, trucking schools, wages, etc, or has just turned their back on it and hopes it will straighten itself out.
