Most truckers know that this profession can be hazardous to our health. Lack of exercise, overeating, poor food choices, high sodium intake, etc, is a sure combination for physical disaster.
I've decided that I must do something about it, or else I'm cruisin' for a brusin'. I don't cherish the thought of a stroke, diabetes, heart attack, blood clot, etc.
Therefore, I put in a place a sensible plan that includes the following:
1. A balanced daily caloric intake based on the FDA recommended daily allowances of protein, carbs and fat. I'm also taking a 1 a day vitamin supplement.
2. I've cut down almost entirely on eating out while on the road. I'm buying more fresh products and preparing them on my truck. I've discovered that almost everything packaged or canned is LOADED with sodium. Just keeping my daily sodium intake at 2500 mg has been a challenge.
3. I'm tracking everything I consume via an app I downloaded called, MyFitnessPal. I'm entering everything I eat after every meal or snack religiously. I've recently installed an app that sync's with a program called, Runtastic pedometer. It tracks through your (believe it or not) cell phone every step you make throughout the day.
4. My next step is to move into a more consistent form of exercise, mainly walking 1 to 2 miles a day to start.
I just completed my first month of tracking everything. I lost 21 lbs, which really surprised me. My wife who is a nursing assistant took my blood pressure yesterday and it was 117 over 73 with a resting heart rate of 59. Which is pretty amazing for me. So, it's getting better.
It's obvious that I must view this as a lifestyle long-term thing or else the results are obvious for those who struggle with obesity. However, my vocation and life depends on it.
Wish me well.
Decided to get in shape...

Best of luck. I think one of the most challengin things for a trucker is to eat well. I for one neglects my food intake when I get really busy. Some days pass and at the end of the day I realise I haven't eaten anything for the whole day. It sure takes its toll on the old body.

Agreed. That's why I try and keep some fresh fruit and veggies near my seat in the smaller 12v cooler I carry
On the truck. When I get too busy to stop, I'll munch on an apple or carrots and what not. -
Wow congrats! Ive tried to make a change for awhile now but it hasnt worked out so well

Good thread Scooter as I too have finally accepted I am not the age I once was and cannot eat anything and everything I want..I was complimented a week ago at the gym after bench pressing 360lbs for a couple reps by a 20-something..However I did not mention I cannot walk at a brisk pace without breathing hard.. I'm 285lbs BTW.. I too am going to do something about my diet.

I'm in. I started my diet 3 weeks ago after I tipped the scale at 250, I have lost 15 pounds in exactly 3 weeks. I already feel better. At 56 it seems easier to put on then to take off. Good luck to you and everyone else trying to get healthy.

Nutrition has always been my weak point when it comes to fitness, and I am not even a trucker yet! I do workouts like P90X and Insanity. Both of them come with nutrition guides, which provide formulas to figure out how many calories you should get per day. Both guides gave me similar figures: 2800-3000 per day. That is going to be one heck of a challenge on the road...especially since it isn't enough to just consume those calories; you have to consume them from the RIGHT kind of food! Still, it is a challenge I look forward to.
