Got a question for you all. My wife and I are looking to get into OTR team driving. We currently rent and will be giving up our apartment and using my parent's home as our mailing address to minimize our expenses the first couple years. We plan on living on the road and won't be going home for our "home time" unless for emergencies. The most important thing for us is to have our two babies with us. It's not an option to separate them or leave them both behind while we drive. I've noticed that most of the trucking companies (for company drivers) state that only 1 pet is allowed. We have two small dogs (total of 20lbs together). My question is this: If we were to sneak in the 2nd dog, what are the chances of the company knowing?

Please, only answer the question if you can give us some useful input. No rude, demeaning or off-topic comments.

well i think you answer your own question!!!! if a driver is allowed one pet ------ which means if there are two driver, each driver is allowed a pet (driver A + driver B =2 pets) thus your two dogs. keep in mine if the company policy say's one pet pre unit (truck) then the above math will not work.

Best to ask the company if it would be ok with them for 2 small dogs. Sneaking anything into a truck that is not allowed by the company or the regulations we all must follow is in most cases cause for immediate firing no 3 strike your out for this one. Most companies will have some understanding for 2 small little dogs if you are running team. The chance of getting caught better than 99.999 %.

Just sneak the other dog along with you and if you get caught just tell them you came out from showering and eating the other night and your 1 dog had a baby(puppy).... I talked with a werner driver once that had 3 or 4 cats but im pretty sure their policy is 1 pet....

I wanted to take my two dog with me, but my company said only one dog. Unfortunate, but I wanted to work for them. I am leaving one of my dogs -- the female, who is afraid of everything, with a friend who wants to train her for a year. I will pay the friend, and get the dog insurance so the friends finances are not strapped due to my dog. The other dog I am taking with me because he is much better in cars, less nervous, and needs exercise less (is a low energy dog). Like I said here somewhere, I would go to the ends of the earth for a company if I could have my 2 dogs-- as it is, I am just going to commit to one year, and then work my way into a local job. The only way I am thinking you, as a couple can keep them is not to go as a team, and each partner go solo. Yes, the husband and one dog, the wife and the other dog.

I just wanted to add that these pet privileges actually cost money. I have seen various ways that they take either a pet deposit, or charge a weekly or monthly fee. I don't know about Prime, Werner or other starter truck companies, but company I am with charges me 150$ per month at a weekly deduction of 37.50$ for the privilege of having a dog on board.

One way to get around it is to do lease purchase. The company cannot tell you what you can or can't do as an independent contractor. It is against the IRS tax laws for any company to set rules concerning how you run your own business. As an independent contractor, you can have a herd of mooing cows inside your cab if you so desire. You can also hire anybody you want to work with you WITHOUT company approval. Its your business. You run it any way you deem fit. Legally, they CANNOT force dispatch on you. These truck companies screw around with the drivers and violate IRS laws at every turn. They treat independent lease purchasers as though they are company drivers. IF A COMPANY IS NOT PAYING YOUR TAXES OUT OF YOUR PAYCHECK, THEY CANNOT CONTROL HOW YOU CHOOSE TO RUN OUR BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All you lease purchasers reading this, take my words to heart! You have legal recourse against any company that jerks you around with the lease purchase program and you can do it for free. Simply call the IRS to file a complaint. Ask the IRS for a form that determines whether or not you are actually a company employee or an independent contractor. The form allows the IRS to open an investigation on that company and to scrutinize its policies. The IRS does not like independent contractorships. They prefer employee status because a good portion of the independent contractors are sloppy paying taxes, if they pay them at all. They are highly likely to rule in your favor. If you decide to do a purchase program, I would recommend going to a tuck dealership rather than signing on with a truck company's program.
