Advise on a broke down cat?

    Long story short.. I'm down in Salt Lake City,UT with both turbo's gone) getting replaced.. Question.. could any trash get into the regen filter? Question... the air to air had to be removed and flushed due to oil, could trash from the turbo get into the oil/engine and should the oil and filter be changed? Is there anything I should be aware of or worried about as far as the engine?

    I had to be towed because I thought it was best to shut it down, total bill will be at $6000

    It was best to shut it down as the oil from the air to air would have eventually made it back to burn in the motor and could have caused a lot bigger problems, as in blowing the engine up. How are they cleaning the air to air (CAC)? as there is only 1 proper way to get all the oil out. I dont think any garbage would get into the engine but think I might change the oil anyway to start off fresh

    I just called the shop to ask the same questions. The air to air was removed and flushed/ cleaned out. Said it's possible that oil could have reached the REGEN filter but the tech thinks doing a a regen on it will take care of that. No engine damage was done per- tech. I'm at a small international dealer shop in Ogden, UT called RUSH. The closet shop around that works on cat engines with-out being towed all the way to Salt Lake. They seem to be a good group of people knowing what's going on. I think I'll have them change the oil & filter which would make me sleep a little better.

    No problem. The only reason I know about the oil is I have seen the after effects of a guy changing his turbo on his own and didnt clean the CAC out. He started up the truck and the oil from the CAC was mixed with the pressurized air and of course diesel and it made his truck rev up uncontrolled (he was unable to stop it) to a massive failure point and it blew hard. It had thick black smoke and oil shooting out of the stacks like a fountian.

    Just got back from checking on trk.. Changing oil and filter before starting it up for a test run and running a re-gen on it. If no problems I should be rolling with in the next two hours. Got's to be in Portland,OR by daylight. Didn't see bill yet but was told between $6,000 & $6,300.. It is what it is.. nothing one can do but suck it up and keep trucking!!

    It is a bit late, but I always change the oil and filter when I replace a turbo. It could be that some trash didn't get filtered and that could have caused the turbo's to fail. That is one reason that I regularly change my oil around 15,000 miles.

    Amother thing that shortens a turbo chargers life is not giving them proper cool down time before shutting the truck off.

    I see guys just shut em down all the time anymore, I guess they're aren't any old drivers teaching at these driving schools, but your advice is and has always been true.
