The key to making money at USX is getting on a dedicated account. I've been grossing 70k+ pulling Dollar General loads. Between DG thriving in this poor economy and the fact that so many drivers don't want to get in the trailer and work, I'm always busy.
Ive also seen a lot of our drivers struggle with the clutch. A lot of them came here straight from school and haven't shifted since. I went 7 years without shifting before I got my 10 speed last fall. I actually quit training for a few weeks so I wouldn't have my students showing me up while I re-learned. Now that I can shift again, I no longer feel trapped with this company.NavigatorWife and Arkansas Frost Thank this. -
I think that's good advice with any company. Haul the loads you're asked to haul and if you find out there is a DM with a dedicated or regional account and they're looking for drivers, call them! Some dedicated might as well be OTR with the mileage they offer. Other shorter runs pay better, and some of them have guaranteed miles. The company sets up fleets for loads that are important to them so they temd to take care of those drivers hauling them. Best choice I've made so far was going regional. Splitting an eight isn't so bad when you've only gotta run 500 miles.

I know there on a mad tear up I-69. Picking up a lot of freight. They recently acquired a Wal-Mart account here by me. I tried talking to a few recruiters but everyone keep giving me different answers to the same question.

That's not what I want to hear, I just signed on to the Gas City Wal Mart account. Hope it is all its cracked up to be. Wish me luck!

if Walmart doesn't work out come one exit north and run DG. It's far from perfect but I can't imagine making anything less than 50k.OtatKen Thanks this.

Now that's what I want to hear! I'll definitely keep that in mind. How does the process of changing accounts work at USX?
I'm certainly not afraid of a good workout (as I understand the DG account is). Shuks, I've been workin my hind end off pullin flatbed doing local steel deliveries for the last 7 months and only making about $500/wk gross...talk about working for peanuts! Sure beats flipping burgers tho!
Thanks so much for the input. I greatly appreciate it.

someone in the office should be able to tell you who to contact. The load planner down there just came from DG, you could ask her to put you in touch with Tony. He's our account mgr. I'd talk to some of our drivers, too. You can get a good idea of what your signing on for before you commit. I've been doing it for 6 years and I'll stick with it until I'm ready financially to buy my own truck. If you're willing to do the work, the money is there. I do whine a little and talk about flatbedding but I've yet to find a flatbed company where I can gross 1400 a week and get a reset at home every weekend.

Thank you, kind sir!
That DG account sounds pretty enticing, we'll see how Wal Mart works out for now.
